While Tottenham have some extremely talented young midfielders in Pape Sarr, Archie Gray, and Lucas Bergvall, the experienced duo of Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur have been scrutinised for their performances this season.
That is an area that Tottenham Hotspur may look to upgrade this summer, and the Lilywhites could turn a long-term midfield target.
Morten Hjulmand has been mooted as a target for Spurs for over a year, and Spurs may finally get an opportunity to bring him through the door this summer.
Tottenham will not face competition from European giants for Morten Hjulmand
A new report in A Bola states that the Sporting captain has been on the North London club’s radar for a long time.
In fact, it is revealed that Thomas Frank had urged Spurs to secure Hjulmand, identifying him as the perfect fit for the Premier League’s physical and tactical demands.
Tottenham’s interest in the 26-year-old has not cooled and the club have monitored his performances closely this season.
The Lilywhites have now been handed another boost as the report says that Juventus are no longer expected to offer competition for Hjulmand this summer.
The Bianconeri had initially identified the Danish star as the man to bolster their midfield and provide some leadership, but the Serie A giants have decided to prioritise additions in other areas of their squad this summer.
Juve have thus taken Hjulmand off their wishlist, potentially leaving the door open for Spurs to strike a deal.
How much would Spurs have to pay for Hjulmand?
While Juve’s interest in the midfielder may have cooled, A Bola reveal that Man City and Man United have both watched the 26-year-old this season and have compiled reports on him, which means that Spurs could still face some competition.
Sporting have already received approaches for Hjulmand and are resigned to losing their star man at the end of the campaign.
Although the Denmark international’s release clause stands at €80m (£69m), it is asserted that the Portuguese club would be willing to sanction his exit for just €50m (£43.2m) after reaching a ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ with the player.
