I did it at Sunderland and I can keep Tottenham up too: Gus Poyet wants the Spurs job

Gus Poyet has now emerged as the latest name to publicly throw his hat into the ring for the Tottenham job, insisting he has what it takes to steer Spurs away from danger.

One month has gone by since Tottenham Hotspur appointed Igor Tudor as interim manager, and results have remained the same.

Spurs are still without a win in the Premier League this calendar year and have managed just two wins in their last 21 league outings.

Gus Poyet throws his name in the mix for Tottenham manager job

Igor Tudor is now under pressure, with results still failing to improve under his tutelage.

The latest defeat to relegation rivals Nottingham Forest has only intensified speculation over his future, with some reports suggesting his time is up.

Spurs, for their part, may need to go back to the drawing board, though the potential vacancy has already left many clamouring for the role.

Tim Sherwood once again put his name in the mix for the Tottenham job, this time claiming he will keep them up, and now Gus Poyet has followed suit by staking his own claim.

Speaking on Tottenham’s current situation, Poyet questioned what he has seen on the pitch and explained his coaching approach, saying:

He told talkSport: “I think they are in danger, I think they are. I did not like what I saw on the pitch. You know, like I said, sometimes… I do not know. You know, when I was a player, I respected the coach’s instructions and then I played. When I was a coach, I tried to give the instructions, but they play.

“I believe the same; I did not change my mind. I do not think now you need to do what I told you; if not, you are not playing, because they need to make the decision on the pitch, because I am not there.

“You know the typical, like when the coach calls you and he says, “Guys,” and you look at him and say, “Yeah, yeah, right,” and play. That was my character, and that is what Simon meant, saying play.”

Addressing whether he would take the job if approached, Poyet pointed to his past experience in a similar situation, adding:

“I already done it in Sunderland. I was in that position – oh, sorry, I was in a worse position. I was seven points adrift… do not ask me how, but we stayed up.

“That is what I was saying about the objectives. There is objective; that was the objective.”

Gus Poyet backs himself to keep Spurs in the Premier League

On whether he can keep Tottenham up, Poyet explained that the reality can differ once inside a club environment, while stressing the need for simplicity in approach:

“From outside, yes. Then from inside is when you find… if you find that problem inside, then definitely. You need to know that it is very easy for everybody to talk outside – ‘Yeah, I know what to do if I go in.’

“Do you remember when Harry Redknapp, after Juande Ramos left, he put ketchup back on the table? Are you going to win or lose because of ketchup? Come on, stop it.

“Now the players, they need something. I think it is as simple as possible – play the players in their best position and play.”

Having had stints in Greece, China and elsewhere, Poyet was also asked about a potential return to England, where he admitted opportunities have been limited:

“I am trying – no chance at the moment, no chance. Not even meetings, which is… because I always say, have a meeting, listen to me, let me convince the chairman.”

On the possibility of Spurs making an approach, he reiterated his willingness while stressing the importance of club backing:

“I cannot say no, and I have to trust my ability. I have got no doubt, but listen to me, I like it when the clubs support the coach. I like it… like what Simon said about, choose your staff – we want to win the league with these players – okay, pick the coach, go with the coach.”
