Former justice minister Crispin Blunt fined £1,200 for having cannabis and crystal meth

Former Conservative justice minister Crispin Blunt has admitted possessing illegal drugs including cannabis and crystal meth.

The charges related to a raid on the ex-MP’s Surrey home in October 2023, while he was still serving in the House of Commons.

He was found to be in possession of the chemical drug GBL, a sedative, as well as cannabis, methamphetamine and methylamphetamine – which is commonly known as crystal meth.

The substances were found while he was being investigated on suspicion of rape.

In May last year, the rape investigation was dropped by Surrey Police after 18 months due to insufficient evidence.

Blunt, 65, pleaded guilty to four drugs charges in an appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Tan Ikram sentenced Blunt to a £1,200 fine, telling him: ‘As a former minister for prisons, probation, and justice, you – like all public servants – served as a role model to all’.

‘I do note your views and your position on prohibition on possession and usage of drugs.

‘That said, I’m sure you as a former Parliamentarian believe in the Rule of Law.

‘The fact is your actions have risked undermining confidence in all Parliamentarians by breaking the very laws you enacted.’

The judge said Blunt’s crimes were aggravated by his admission to hosting drugs parties and facilitating the use of illegal substances by others.

He served in David Cameron’s Conservative government as parliamentary under-secretary of state for prisons and youth justice from 2010 to 2012, before chairing the Foreign Affairs Committee from 2015 until 2017.

He lost the Tory whip in October 2023 when he was first arrested by police, and stood down from Parliament at the 2024 general election.

Blunt was in possession of the chemical drug GBL, a sedative, as well as cannabis, methamphetamine and methylamphetamine – which is commonly known as crystal meth.

He has pleaded guilty to one count of possessing class A drugs and three charges of possession of class B drugs.

The drugs were found when Blunt, who represented Reigate in Parliament between 1997 and 2024, was being investigated on suspicion of rape.

After an 18-month investigation, Surrey Police announced in May last year that there would be no further action on the rape allegation due to insufficient evidence.

Blunt, wearing a charcoal-grey suit, white shirt, and purple tie, is representing himself in the criminal court proceedings.

Prior to entering Parliament, Blunt was a graduate of the Sandhurst Military Academy and spent more than a decade as an officer in the British Army.
