20s lose narrowly in Purcell Cup
Under 20s Purcell Cup – Old Wesley 26 Queens University 28
The 20s endured an agonising defeat on Sunday to Queen’s University in the 1st round of the Purcell cup.
A slow start resulting in Queen’s racking up 3 tries and a 21-point lead before the 20s kicked into gear, scoring an amazing 26 unanswered points. But unfortunately, a late converted try gave Queens the win by 2 points.
In a year full of highs and lows the team deserve great credit for sticking with it all season through the good and bad, the small squad representing the club with true sportsmanship that emphasised fair play, respect and courtesy towards their opposition, match officials, and their teammates.
A special mention to Sam McMullen who captained the side and to Milo Campbell, Kevin Cussens, Andrew McAdams, Ciaran Doyle, and Finn Kennelly who are overage for next season but will hopefully continue their playing careers in the club at the various levels. Joss O’Keefe was ever present in the centre and will move back to England. Joss following in his grandad’s footsteps who played for Old Wesley in the 50s, and who came to watch a number of games. To the rest of the squad, they will all be back next season, and this will give us a great base to build on, and will, no doubt, will contribute to us becoming a more competitive side.
A special mention to Patricia, Wayne, Ivan and Clatch for their fantastic support throughout the season. To coaches Adam, Ian, Josh and Chunk and the management team of Kinners, Bernard, Mark, Will, Aidan and Arron; a job well done. Enjoy the summer and see you all in August.
