Amazon's Top-Selling Trunk-Mounted Bike Rack Is on Sale for Less Than $50

Why We Love This Deal

Shopping for bike racks can be a demoralizing experience. You can spend nearly a thousand dollars for a name-brand hitch-mounted rack, and even the more affordable options cost hundreds. But you don’t have to pay these astronomical prices just to transport your bike on your car—right now, Amazon has an awesome deal on a bestselling trunk rack that drops the price to less than $50.

Ahead of Amazon's Big Spring Sale, which begins on March 25, the Allen Sports Deluxe 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack is just $46, a 22% discount from its normal price of $59 (Allen Sports sells it for $65, which makes Amazon’s price a 29% markdown). Amazon’s deal beats Walmart’s price for this rack, but even without a discount, this is a fantastic deal for a trunk rack. Other top-rated name-brand options like the Saris Bones, Yakima FullBack, and Thule Gateway Pro (the one I own) cost $200 to $300 each. Better yet, it’s a No. 1 bestseller on Amazon with over 5,800 five-star reviews—it’s a quality piece of gear for a bargain price.

What Shoppers Should Know

  • Bike Capacity: 2 bikes
  • Weight Rating: 35 pounds per bike
  • Fits: Most sedans, SUVs, and hatchbacks
  • Material: Steel
  • Attachment Points: 5 straps with hooks

The Deluxe rack has space for two bikes (up to 35 pounds per bike) and attaches to your vehicle using metal hooks on webbing straps. My Thule Gateway has a similar system (as do all trunk-mounted racks), and although the straps can be a bit finicky to set up at first, the rack is very stable once it's attached. And once you have the straps set at the correct lengths for your vehicle, setup is really quick. The rack itself is made from steel for strength and durability, and foam pads keep the rack from scratching your car’s paint when it’s mounted. Two sets of cradles hold up your bikes’ top tubes, and you secure the bikes with simple webbing straps integrated onto each cradle. When not in use, the rack folds completely flat for compact storage.

Compared to my Thule rack, this Allen model has one less attachment point (5 straps vs. 6), and it also lacks an additional cradle that attaches to the bike’s seat tube, preventing it from swaying when mounted. Shoppers say the Allen rack is very secure, however, and although the seat tube cradles are helpful, you could use additional straps to keep the bike firmly in place on the rack.

Note that there are also rack options that include an adaptor bar and extra straps. The adaptor bar allows you to use this rack with mountain bikes that have a sloped top tube—you attach the adaptor to the bike and then attach the adaptor to the rack so the bike stays level when mounted. The extra straps help keep your bike wheels and handlebars stationary when mounted (but you could also use any bungee cord or ratchet strap you have lying around for this purpose). Finally, check your vehicle on Allen Sports’ Rack Finder to make sure this rack will fit.

What Shoppers Are Saying

Shoppers say this rack works exceedingly well and offers a fantastic value given its affordable price point. One shopper used an earlier version of this Allen rack for forty years, and they said today’s iteration is “exceptionally well built” with the same classic, time-tested design.

Several others noted the ease of use and reliability. “Installation was a breeze,” one wrote. Most importantly, the rack creates a rock-solid platform for your bikes once it’s installed and is “very stable and secure.” One shopper mentioned that it performed well during a cross-country drive from New York to California—perhaps the ultimate test for any bike rack.

There’s no telling how long this Amazon deal will last, so scoop up your Allen Sports bike rack for just $46 today before the price jumps back up.
