Razer Viper V4 Review: The Greatest Gaming Mouse I've Ever Used
Razer has long been synonymous with quality PC video game products. From gaming headsets to keyboards to mice, it's hard to meet a PC gamer who hasn't at least dabbled with Razer products. With the release of the latest iteration in Razer's acclaimed Viper line, the Razer Viper V4, Razer has established itself as one of the most premium brands for gamers.
The Razer Viper V4 is no exception. From its surprisingly lightweight feel and design to its virtual one-to-one tracking, the Viper V4 is a stellar mouse all the way around, though the $159.99 price makes this a premium product for hardcore gamers. Still, it is hard to deny how well-made the Viper V4 is.
Made For Competitive Gaming
The Viper line of gaming mice is focused on competitive gaming. "Made for esports pros and competitive gamers, the Razer Viper is favored for its no-nonsense performance and lightweight symmetrical design. Ideal for medium to large hand sizes and users who favor a claw or fingertip grip, choose the perfect model that adapts to all your needs," reads the product line's description on Razer's official website.
As an upgrade to the Viper V3, the Viper V4 features the same lightweight design as its predecessor. It also features the Focus Pro 50K Optical Sensor Gen-3, Gen-4 Optical Mouse Switches, and, one of its most impressive features--up to 180 hours of wireless battery life (with an option to use the mouse wired as well). The device also comes with a HyperSpeed Wireless Gen-2 Dongle, which also shows the current battery life of the mouse and allows for quick swapping to a wired connection if needed.
The Viper V4 is around 9 percent lighter than the Viper V3, but it has a balanced structure, making it almost feel like a high-quality toy instead of a traditional mouse--perfect for gaming. It takes barely any effort to lift the mouse off a mouse pad, but it is just heavy enough not to cause input errors from flicking the mouse or picking it up to realign positions.
The scroll wheel is a Optical Scroll Wheel, instead of the traditional mechanical wheels found in most gaming mice. I found the wheel to be shockingly accurate. I would spin it in games like Resident Evil 4 remake and find myself switching to exactly what I needed in one fluid motion. It got to the point where I didn't even have to question if I had the right weapon equipped; I just knew based on where I stopped the mouse wheel because it is so responsive.
I tested the mouse in several multiplayer games as well. Whether it was Overwatch, Rainbow Six Siege, or Marvel Rivals, I found myself making every motion with the Viper V4 easily, stopping exactly where I wanted it to. The mouse felt like a natural extension, and while no mouse can make you a better player instantly, I felt the Viper V4 gave me the light, one-to-one motion that made me realize everything I was doing right but also everything I was doing wrong in all of those games. It truly feels like the lowest input latency mouse I've ever used, and it not only made me feel more competitive, but it also made those games more fun, in my opinion.
One Battery To Rule Them All
I was initially skeptical about using a wireless mouse for competitive gaming; I had been a wired user my whole life for the need to reduce input latency as much as possible. If anything, the Razer Viper V4 may be the most accurate, one-to-one mouse I've ever used.
Even more impressive is the device's stellar battery life. With up to 180 hours of intentional use before needing a quick charge, I found myself never even questioning if the mouse was going to run out of battery. It's the perfect device for traveling to tournaments, especially if the user is unaware of the environment and may not have easy access to wired cords.
The Viper V4 offers versatility without sacrificing performance at all.
Gigantus V2 Pro
Along with the release of the Viper V4. Razer is also releasing its new line of gaming mouse pads with the Gigantus V2 Pro.
The mouse pad line features five different speed ratings for five different types of gamers: Max Control, Control, Balance, Speed, and Max Speed. I tested the Balance and Max Control pads, and they are both brilliant.
The Balance pad offers medium friction, so it's a balance between speed and accuracy. The Max Control pad gives slow, calculated mouse swipes.
The pad itself is large and allows for clean movement in a wide area. The fabric is smooth, stable, and it's a joy to play on. The Gigantus V2 Pro is priced at $49.99.
Built For Gamers
If competitive players are looking for a new mouse or casual players want a feel for a great gaming mouse, it's very easy to recommend the Viper V4 Pro. That being said, I don't think there are enough huge overhauls, additions, or improvements to justify a complete upgrade from the Viper V3, unless some gamers need the additional battery life.
The price of the device makes this a premium product for serious gamers. Those serious gamers are probably looking for the best of the best, and in that regard, I could easily see them wanting to use the Viper V4. For casual gamers or players that just need something "good enough," I don't think the Viper V4 is necessarily the product aimed at them. Again, given it's premium price tag.
That being said, overall, the Razer Viper V4 is an insanely impressive gaming mouse, and I can easily see it being a competitive standard for the near future.
