Turkey–Germany Call Urges De-escalation as Iran War Intensifies
Hakan Fidan and Johann Wadephul held a telephone conversation to discuss the ongoing war involving Iran, focusing on diplomatic efforts to end the escalating conflict.
According to reports, the talks reviewed attempts to halt the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran since February 28, as tensions continue to rise across the region.
The conflict has resulted in significant civilian casualties, with UNICEF reporting that around 206 children have been killed in Iran amid the recent fighting, highlighting the humanitarian toll.
In response, Iran has carried out drone and missile attacks targeting Israel as well as countries such as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US forces, further widening the scope of the conflict.
These retaliatory strikes have caused heavy damage to critical infrastructure, disrupted global markets, and severely impacted air travel across the region, raising fears of broader instability.
The war began on February 28 and has rapidly escalated, drawing in multiple regional and global actors, while diplomatic efforts have so far failed to secure a ceasefire.
Turkey has taken an active diplomatic role, with Fidan previously engaging in separate talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as well as US and European officials to push for de-escalation.
As violence intensifies and diplomatic efforts continue, the risk of a wider regional conflict remains high, making urgent international coordination critical to achieving a ceasefire and preventing further humanitarian devastation.
