Trader Joes Glass Shards Recall Expanded Again, Now Covers 10 Million Pounds of Food
A growing recall involving Trader Joe’s frozen meals has now expanded to nearly 10 million pounds of food distributed across most of the country, after concerns about possible contamination.
The Recall Expands
Ajimoto Foods North America Inc. pulled 9,885,240 pounds of Trader Joe’s Vegetable Fried Rice from shelves after reports that pieces of glass were found inside the one pound packages, according to an alert from the FDA. The fragments were described as being between 1 and 3 centimeters long and 2 to 4 millimeters wide.
The recalled products were sold in 43 states, with best-by dates ranging from Feb. 28, 2026, through Nov. 19, 2026. Hawaii, Maine, New Mexico, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia and Iowa were not affected.
This latest action builds on an earlier recall that first began on Feb. 19 and was expanded again on March 3, according to federal officials. Additional items were later included, such as Trader Joe’s Chicken Shu Mai, which are chicken and vegetable dumplings served with soy sauce, along with Trader Joe’s Chicken Fried Rice that includes stir-fried rice, vegetables, eggs and seasoned dark meat chicken. Those products carried best-by dates between Feb. 28, 2026, and Aug. 19, 2027.
Where the Problem Began
Investigators traced the issue back to a vegetable ingredient, with carrots identified as the most likely source of the contamination.
In total, the broader recall has now reached nearly 37 million pounds of ready-to-eat foods spanning 16 different brands, including well-known names like Kroger and Tai Pei.
Trader Joe’s has dealt with several recalls in recent months, many tied to unexpected contamination or labeling concerns. Earlier incidents included frozen meals and packaged items being pulled over issues ranging from potential foreign materials to undeclared allergens. While most of those cases were handled quickly and did not lead to injuries, they have added to growing scrutiny around prepared and frozen grocery products.
Officials warned that some of the affected items may still be sitting in home freezers. So far, no injuries have been reported in connection to this recall, according to the FDA. Anyone who believes they may have been harmed is encouraged to contact a “healthcare provider.”
Customers who purchased the recalled products are advised not to eat them and should either throw them away or return them to the store for a refund.
This Is Far From the First Time
Trader Joe’s has had a string of recalls over the past year or so, mostly tied to contamination risks or labeling issues. Here are some of the more notable recent ones beyond the frozen rice situation:
Organic Acai Bowls (2025)
One of the more talked-about recalls in 2025 involved Trader Joe’s Organic Acai Bowls, which were pulled after concerns they could contain plastic pieces. Customers were told to throw them out or return them for a refund.
Sparkling Water Bottles (2025)
Trader Joe’s also recalled more than 60,000 bottles of Gerolsteiner sparkling mineral water because some bottles could crack or break. While no injuries were reported, the concern was potential breakage during use.
Cheese Curds (2025)
A product called “Vampire Slayer” cheese curds was recalled in parts of California and Nevada due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious illness.
Salad Dressing and Other Packaged Foods (2025)
There were also recalls tied to undeclared allergens. Trader Joe’s Hot Honey Mustard Dressing was pulled because it may have contained allergens like peanuts, sesame, soy, and wheat that weren’t listed on the label.
