Best mane and tail detanglers for horses

Absorbine ShowSheen Hair Polish & Detangler

Sizes: 950ml

This formula from Absorbine works as both a coat shine spray and detangler. It contains pro-vitamins to condition the skin and coat, plus silk proteins to strengthen the hair and give it a healthy shine. The sprayer head allows targeted application with vertical or horizontal spray patterns and sprays upside down for those hard-to-reach areas.

I find with this detangler you don’t need as many sprays for application compared to others. I believe this is down to the efficiency of the spray head. It leaves a nice knot-free finish, with noticeable less hair breakage when brushing.

Cavalor Star Shine

Sizes: 500ml
H&H review: 10/10, H&H approved

This long-lasting hair conditioner from Cavalor can be used to maintain a knot-free mane and tail, and give a brightening gleam to your horse’s coat.

When Harriet Rimmer tested this detangler she found it gave a healthy shine and had long lasting effects. It leaves a fresh aroma and the hair feeling conditioned. You can get a cheaper detanglers, but this is worth the price tag.

Equine America Silky Tail Detangler

Sizes: 1l

Mane, tail and coat shine spray with a highly effective dust and dirt repellent action. The newly developed silicone oil microemulsion makes the hair soft and naturally shiny. It leaves hair tangle free and easy to comb, and keeps its volume without feeling artificial. The powerful dust- and dirt-repellent action and tangle-free effect lasts for several days.

I stumbled across this detangler when my usual one was out of stock and I’m so glad I did. With three heavy horses and lots of hair to brush, this product has been a life saver. After applying this spray, their manes and tails feel softer and look conditioned. I’ve noticed less knots and hair breakage and they have added volume. It’s not the cheapest available but due to the long-lasting effects a bottle lasts a long time, even when using on three big horses.

Leovet 5Star Detangler

H&H review: 8/10

This Leovet spray promotes easy combing of the mane and tail, while protecting from dust and dirt for several days. It contains wheat pentavitin, which stops itching, prevents dry skin and moisturises, and pro-vitamin B5 to encourage healthy, shiny, soft and voluminous hair. It also contains arginine, which stimulates hair growth.

Harriet tested this detangler and she felt that it didn’t put as much gloss on the hair in comparison to others tested, but it definitely detangled and nourished the hair effectively.

This trusted product from NAF has had a makeover in the form of new branding (early 2026), so while the label might look different, it is still the same formula. This NAF conditioning spray keeps manes and tails free of tangles, feeling smooth and looking shiny. Cowboy Magic Detangler and Shine

Sizes: 4oz, 16oz or 32oz

This product from Cowboy Magic might seem expensive, but it’s highly concentrated so you shouldn’t need to use much. It contains silk protein and panthenol for a great shine and pure conditioning. It can be used on wet or dry hair to restore moisture, strengthen the hair and protect against UV rays.

This could be a great alternative to spray if you have a sensitive horse. A little goes a long way.

Supreme Products Detangle & Shine

Sizes: 500ml or 5l

This Supreme Products spray will keep manes and tails tangle free and ring ready throughout the season. It’s also described as particularly handy in winter and for use on natives and traditionals.

Absorbine ShowSheen Detangler Gel

Sizes: 118ml

This gel untangles the toughest knots as well as deeply conditioning the hair. It contains Moroccan Argan oil, which is a key ingredient in many high-end human hair care products, and provides a high-gloss, silky finish, leaving manes and tails tangle-free for days with no greasy residue. It’s ideal for removing burrs and debris from matted manes and tails.

What is a detangler?

Horse mane and tail detanglers are similar to a conditioner you might use on your own hair – they help to tease out the knots and leave the hair conditioned and feeling fuller.

They are available in spray or serum form and should be easy to apply and formulated to keep the mane and tail hair tangle free for as long as possible. Some detangling sprays can also be used as a coat shine spray – they should not attract dust or leave the hair greasy, but can be used to help to repel dirt.

Does detangling spray really work?

The key benefits of using a detangler spray for your horse are to reduce knots, ease the combing process, adding moisture and enhancing shine. By making your horse’s mane and tail softer and more flexible, it helps prevent knots and minimise hair breakage.
