Family Decides They're 'Boycotting' a Cousin's Wedding After 1 of Them Is Disinvited. They Have a Theory Why

After one member of a family was disinvited to a cousin’s wedding, the entire group has decided that they will no longer attend.

Taking to Reddit‘s “Wedding Shaming” forum, the jilted guest revealed that they’d received a save the date confirming the wedding “about 6 months ago.” They were looking forward to the chance to celebrate their cousin on her big day and to reunite with their four siblings, who they don’t live near.

However, they began to get confused and concerned as the wedding date was getting closer. All of their siblings received official invitations “about two months ago.” The Redditor’s invite never showed up.

When they reached out to their cousin to ask what had happened, they were informed that they were no longer welcome.

In their post, the Reddit user noted that their siblings all got plus ones for the big day.

However, their cousin told them that they simply didn’t have the funds to pay for everyone to attend.

They continued, hypothesizing about what might have happened.

“I want to believe it’s finances but I’m worried it’s because my partner and I are gay or maybe because I’m transgender,” they wrote. “These [aren't] new facts about me and I’ve always found my cousin incredibly accepting, but her fiancé is very religious. The wedding is in a church. Perhaps she had to take his families lead on who could and couldn’t be there.”

Thankfully, the poster’s family is rallying behind them.

In the comments section, they replied to another user, saying that the group “all decided today they are boycotting the wedding.”

“I’m really lucky that my immediate family is so supportive and protective of me,” they wrote, adding that the plan now was “to get a hotel and take ourselves out to a fancy dinner.”

Another person responded, writing, “I’m so happy to see this. Don’t feel embarrassed. Your cousin is the one who should be embarrassed. Even if the disinvite isn’t because you’re trans (but it is), disinviting you at all is insulting and is a statement about how important she views you.”

Others were also quick to agree.

“I’m sorry, but I think your gut instinct is correct: this is 100% because of your gender identity and orientation. To invite not only your entire family but also give them plus ones makes it so painfully obvious,” the Redditor wrote.

The user advised: “I also think you should text your cousin back and say “I’m really confused. It looks like you sent invitations to every single one of my family members and their partners. I could understand making cuts at extended family in general, but why did you single me out?” Make her say it. I think she deserves to feel uncomfortable about what she is doing.”
