Iran claims world’s first hit on US F-35 fighter jet
Iran has claimed it struck a US F-35 stealth fighter during a combat mission over its territory, in what could mark a major moment in the ongoing war. US officials said the aircraft was damaged and forced to make an emergency landing at a US air base in the Middle East.
According to the report, the pilot survived the incident and is in stable condition. A spokesperson for US Central Command said the aircraft landed safely, while an investigation is underway into what exactly caused the damage.
Tehran says its air defence systems successfully hit the advanced fighter jet. Washington has not fully confirmed Iran’s account, but US officials have acknowledged that the aircraft was struck by what is believed to be Iranian fire.
The incident is significant because the F-35 is regarded as one of the most advanced stealth aircraft in the world. It is built to avoid radar detection and operate deep inside hostile airspace with advanced sensors and networked warfare systems.
Military analysts say that even a partial hit on an F-35 would raise serious questions about how effective Iranian detection and air defence systems have become. It could also challenge the long-held perception that stealth aircraft can operate almost unchecked in heavily defended skies.
The report said the F-35 costs more than $100 million per unit and is used or ordered by over 19 countries. That makes any successful strike on such an aircraft politically, militarily and symbolically important.
The report says the F-35 combines stealth design, internal weapons bays, sensor fusion and real-time data-sharing with other military platforms. These features have made it the backbone of US and allied air power in modern warfare.
It also comes amid broader losses for the United States in the conflict, with the report saying at least 16 US aircraft have been lost since the war began, including several MQ-9 Reaper drones and other aircraft lost in accidents or friendly fire.
While US officials insist operations are continuing, the reported strike has added to concerns about the risks facing American aircraft in Iranian airspace. The incident is likely to sharpen scrutiny of both US tactics and Iran’s evolving air defence capabilities.
