NFL Faces a Major Referee Problem Ahead of 2026 Season

The NFL could have a pretty significant problem on its hands heading into the 2026 season, and based on how things have gone in the past, there's a good chance it could impact the product on the field.

The NFL is in the midst of negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Referees Association. However, those negotiations do not seem to have progressed, and it sounds like the NFL is preparing for the possibility of replacement referees.

Replacement Officials

According to emails obtained by ESPN this week, the NFL is beginning the process of hiring replacement officials this season as a contingency plan in case the league cannot agree to a deal with the Referees Association.

The email indicates that the league is looking for a list of about 150 mostly small college officials by the end of this weekend that would serve as replacement referees for the NFL if the league can't come to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement with the union.

"Those officials could begin onboarding as early as April then attend a four-day clinic in May. Absent a CBA agreement, they would continue training through the summer and make visits to training camps before the regular season begins," ESPN reported.

Not the First Time

If the league were to use replacement officials, it would not be the first time in recent memory. Back in 2012, the league faced a similar situation as failed negotiations led to a lockout that extended 110 days and stretched into the season before eventually ending after the third week of the regular season.

As ESPN points out, however, things did not go well the last time the league opted for replacement referees.

"The NFL's use of replacement officials in 2012 was universally criticized by coaches and players, in part because it dipped into lower-level colleges and minor professional leagues, including the Arena League. The final game before the agreement ended with a chaotic 'Fail Mary' ruling that granted the Seattle Seahawks a 14-12 victory over the Green Bay Packers," Kevin Seifert wrote for ESPN this week.

Concerns Arise

NFLRA executive director Scott Green expressed some serious concerns about the possibility of the league opting for replacement referees.

For starters, Green believes there would be an increased vulnerability to gamblers and the integrity of the game with replacement referees. Green also added that the replacement referees have not previously experienced the size and speed of the NFL game, which could jeopardize the safety of players.

Then, there's the fact that the replacement referees were a complete failure back in 2012.

"Frankly," Green told ESPN, "I'm surprised they would even consider it after 2012."

Needless to say, it sounds like the league could have a problem on its hands if it can't come to an agreement with the NFLRA.
