Bournemouth vs Manchester United – Red Devils’ top-four credentials face stern test in Boscombe
Manchester United resume their pursuit of a top-three finish in the Premier League on Friday as they head to the Vitality Stadium to face Bournemouth.
What seemed nearly impossible in December has become a distinct possibility for the Red Devils, who are on course to secure a top-four finish for the first time since the 2022/23 season.
United’s decision to sack underperforming manager Ruben Amorim at the beginning of January has turned the club’s fortunes around in spectacular fashion, with caretaker boss Michael Carrick steering his team back on track.
Indeed, the 20-time English champions have dropped points just three times in ten league matches since severing ties with the 41-year-old, accumulating more points (23) than any other side since Amorim’s departure.
Last weekend’s dominant 3-1 victory over direct top-four rivals Aston Villa at Old Trafford saw Man Utd move five points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool, bringing them a step closer to locking down a top-four spot.
However, with eight games left to play, there’s no room for complacency, as Carrick’s charges gear up to take on Bournemouth on Friday evening, hoping to tighten their grip on a Champions League position.
Awkward match-up
Despite heading towards mid-table mediocrity, Bournemouth are more than capable of spoiling Man Utd’s lofty ambitions, as most recently witnessed by a goal-glutted 4-4 draw at the Theatre of Dreams in December.
Indeed, the Cherries have recently been a thorn in United’s side, something fans tuning in via soccer streams will have witnessed firsthand.
Bournemouth are enjoying the longest unbeaten streak against the Red Devils in the club’s history (W2, D3), with both those victories coming at Old Trafford and producing an identical 3-0 scoreline.
Still, manager Andoni Iraola may not be optimistic about his team’s prospects in this showdown after losing standout midfielder Tyler Adams to injury, as confirmed by Manutd.com.
The absence of the USMNT star may not be the only source of concern for the former Rayo Vallecano coach, given that the Cherries have managed only one victory in the last seven home encounters against United (D2, L4).
Nevertheless, the visitors have emerged victorious from just one of their last four Premier League visits to Boscombe (D2, L1), scoring one goal or fewer on three occasions.
Newfound confidence
Despite Man Utd’s unenviable track record in this fixture, the Red Devils ought to take this trip in a buoyant mood, having gone unbeaten in five consecutive away games (W2, D3) before a 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United last time out.
Perhaps surprisingly, United have won just two of their six Friday-held Premier League matches (D2, L2), yet they come into this clash on the back of three wins from their last four league outings (L1), showing renewed momentum ahead of this trip.
Further confidence stems from Matheus Cunha’s resurgence.
United’s marquee summer signing returned to the scoresheet against Villa last weekend, halting his five-game drought in the Premier League before admitting he’s still trying to convince Casemiro to stay at Old Trafford (via The Sun).
Even though he has only scored seven goals in 27 league appearances this season, Cunha has shown flashes of brilliance that could prove decisive in Man Utd’s push for consistency in the closing stages of the campaign.
Two things Man Utd must address down the final stretch
Only table-topping Arsenal (61) and runners-up Manchester City (60) have scored more goals in the Premier League this season than Man Utd’s 54.
While that testifies to United’s drastic improvement in the final third compared to last season, it’s worth noting that Carrick’s charges have attempted a league-high 353 shots this term.
Man Utd’s conversion rate remains an issue, and finding a way to resolve this issue would significantly bolster the club’s chances of securing a place in next season’s Champions League.
They’ve been especially ineffective in the first halves of their away games, scoring only eight of their 24 league goals on the road before half-time, so Carrick will expect a bit more urgency from the start on Friday.
