Man Utd are "seriously working" to sign £55m star, player open to move
Manchester United are ‘seriously working’ on a move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali during the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils are poised to strengthen their midfield department this summer. Casemiro will leave when his contract expires at the end of June.
Manuel Ugarte could likewise head for the exit door. He has had limited playing time in recent months, and the club may decide to cut their losses on him.
Amidst this, journalist Christopher Michel has claimed that United are ‘seriously working’ on a deal for Tonali and he is ‘quite open’ to joining the Red Devils.
The Red Devils have been keeping tabs on the Italian ace for a long time.
Tonali may not be a perfect midfield solution
The Italy international has been a key player for the Magpies and has been ever-present in the heart of their midfield when fit and available for selection.
In the current campaign, Tonali has exhibited a tireless work rate, and he has also caught the eye with his regular high pressing and brilliant recovery runs.
The 25-year-old has similar defensive traits to Casemiro, but does not necessarily offer a regular goalscoring solution from the centre of the park.
Casemiro has seven league goals in the ongoing season, while Tonali has managed to score just five times in the division since his £55 million move to the Magpies.
On top of this, the AC Milan graduate is not the strongest distributor. He has a passing accuracy of only 85 percent, with an average of 37 passes per league outing.
United ideally need someone who can control proceedings in the heart of the midfield and provide a better connection to the attack with strong distribution skills.
Tonali would be a good acquisition in the summer, but may not be a perfect signing.
The Magpies could hold out for a hefty fee of close to £100m for his services. At that price, they could be better off looking at other options, such as Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson.
