This 'Dune' Star Has Only One Scene in the Third Film
She may appear in the first trailer for Dune: Part Three, but don’t expect to see much of Rebecca Ferguson's Lady Jessica in the new film.
New footage released by Warner Bros. on Tuesday, March 17, confirms Ferguson's Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother will pop up on screen in the movie. Her appearance, however, will be short-lived, something Ferguson herself shared in an interview with Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast.
In the franchise from director Denis Villeneuve—adapted from Frank Herbert’s books— Ferguson is mother to Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides.
Lady Jessica's Role in Dune: Part Three
According to Ferguson, she’ll only appear in one scene for the third film.
“I just dipped my toe in. I have no sort of comments on it. The script is great, I’ve read it, I think it’s going to be fantastic, but my journey was number one and two,” she told Horowitz.
“I don’t even think she was supposed to be in three," she continued. "And then Denis was like, I need to have one scene. And I get one scene.”
“But that was a weird feeling, walking onto a set that you know so well and knowing you don’t have a part of it,” she added. “There’s a lot of FOMO and the acceptance of, this is just what it is.”
Ferguson said that, while she’s only in one scene, she was given the whole script.
Possible Changes from Source Material
It’s actually kind of surprising Ferguson has a scene at all in the third film, as Lady Jessica doesn’t appear in the third of Herbert's books, Dune Messiah. The character doesn’t return until the following installment, Children of Dune.
Her inclusion appears to be one of a few changes from the source material, as fans have speculated Anya Taylor-Joy’s character, Alia Atreides, storyline in the third film will also reference her subplot in the fourth book. It’s possible Villeneuve is combining elements from both the third and fourth books for the movie.
The appearance of Florence Pugh’s Princess Irulan has also sparked some conversation on social media, as fans wonder why her face has been covered in clay on one of the promotional photos. This, it seems, it not something in any of the books.
Pugh herself seemed to reference the confusion, sharing the photo to her Instagram Stories with the caption, “Check out why Irulan has a clay mask in Dune 3????”
Dune: Part Three Promises More Action From Storied Franchise
Dune: Part Three is being billed as the “epic conclusion” of Villeneuve’s series, despite Herbert writing six books in the franchise before his death. A number of other prequels and spinoffs from other authors were released following Herbert's death, some of which were co-written by his son, Brian Herbert.
At this point, it’s unclear how many of the books Villeneuve’s final film will cover, though the official synopsis says it’s only “based on the novel Dune Messiah.” The movie is set 17 years after the events of the previous film.
Returning for the third film are Chalamet, Zendaya, Pugh, Ferguson, Taylor-Joy, Jason Momoa, Isaach De Bankolé, Javier Bardem and Charlotte Rampling. A very blonde Robert Pattinson joins the cast, as does Ida Brooke and Moma's son with Lisa Bonet, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa.
It hits theaters December 18.
