Consultation on Liverpool City Centre to Childwall walking, wheeling and cycling scheme
The next phase of consultation is under way on a plan to improve walking and cycling routes between the centre of Liverpool and the south of the city.
The proposed route is roughly 8km long, connecting the city centre with Childwall, as well as large residential areas and key leisure, employment and education destinations along the corridor, such as Wavertree Sports Park, the University of Liverpool and Liverpool Hope University.
It would connect existing cycle provision at either end – on Lime Street in the city centre and the Liverpool Loop Line in Childwall.
It also connects with recently completed schemes, such as that on Catharine Street, building on the vision to create a network of safe and attractive cycling and walking routes across the city, with features such as improved surfaces on the road and pavements, and upgrades to lighting.
A previous consultation found that 77 per cent of people who responded were supportive and that 69 per cent would use if built.
Feedback which has been acted upon includes:
- Clear and separated cycle lane provision where possible
- Retaining as many car parking spaces as practical
- Increasing the space between parking bays and cycle lanes
- The use of raised crossings to help improve safety for pedestrians and slow cars down.
Designs have also been changed to ensure bus waiting spaces are fully separated from cycle lanes.
The scheme will be built in three sections:
Section 1: City Centre
- New fully-segregated bi-directional cycle track on Renshaw Street, provides connections to Lime Street and the city centre. Continues up Leece Street, Hardman Street and Myrtle Street for access to the University, connecting with the new cycle provision on Catharine Street
- Upgraded crossing facilities at key junctions and pedestrian desire lines along the route
- Passes Smithdown Primary School where the existing cycle track will be changed to increase pedestrian space at the school entry
- Improved footways for pedestrians and surfacing on the roads.
Section 2: Wavertree
- Upgrades to crossings at Smithdown Road/ Upper Parliament Street junction making it easier and safer to cross the road
- New traffic calming features on Earle Road and Lawrence Road to improve on road cycling
- Closure of Lawrence Road at the Medical Centre to reduce the number of cars cutting through the neighbourhoodCreate a safer and more welcoming environment in the area around the schools – Archbishop Blanch and Lawrence Community Primary School
- General upgrades to all pavements including raised crossings at side roads to make it easier to cross
- Signed route through Wavertree Park with improved lighting
- Closure of Garmoyle Road at Gregson Memorial to reduce number of cars cutting through the neighbourhood
- New fully-segregated bi-directional cycle track on Grant Avenue and Prince Alfred Road.
Section 3: Childwall
- New fully-segregated bi-directional cycle track on Fir Lane and Woolton Road.
- Upgraded crossing facilities at key junctions and pedestrian desire lines along the route.
- Marked quiet route along Dunbabin Road and Childwall Abbey Road, providing connection to Liverpool Loop Line.
- Junction improvements at Queens Drive and Childwall Park Avenue, making it easier to cross when walking and cycling.
- Improvements to bus platforms along Woolton Road.
- Upgrades to Childwall Triangle including closure of Childwall Abbey Road to make this area a more welcoming environment for pedestrians and cyclists

What happens next?
This consultation will close at 5pm on Monday 13 April 2026.
All the feedback we receive from this consultation will be carefully analysed and considered. We will review any design issues highlighted during the consultation before we begin work on the next stage of design.
We’ll produce a report which will summarise the responses we receive, and this will be discussed with our stakeholders and design team. The report will be published on our website.
Construction is expected to begin in phases in late 2027/early 2028.
The design work for the scheme has been funded by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.
