The Popular Song, Which Dropped in 1984, is an 'Epic Rock Ballad'
In the tally, Collider describes Prince's "Purple Rain" as an "epic rock ballad" that withstands the test of time. "Prince is another artist who branched out into many other genres besides rock, but many of his songs did indeed rock, and few as impressively as the title track from Purple Rain," the outlet notes.
"'Let's Go Crazy' and 'When Doves Cry' are also highlights from that album, and technically stand as more energetic songs, but 'Purple Rain' is about as great as epic rock ballads get," the story adds. "It's also an all-timer of a closing track, featuring some of Prince's best vocal work and what would have to be his most cathartic and memorable guitar-playing, too, which is saying a lot."
Collider adds that as with acts such as Beatles, "Prince was so legendary that you can’t get everything he was capable of condensed into just one song, but you find a lot of what made him iconic in 'Purple Rain.'"
Fans of the chart-topping song debated on whether it's truly "classic rock" in the story's comments section. "Sorry, but Prince, U2 and Gun & Roses are not "classic rock" artists and none of their songs would even be close to top 500 let alone top 25 classic rock songs," one said. "He definitely rocked the solo on 'While my guitar gently weeps,'" another replied.

"“Heroes” is also perfect for any mood. If you're sad, it’s sad, and if you're hopeful, it might inspire hope, and then for every emotion in between, “Heroes” is there for you, and it always sounds perfect."
Bruce Springsteen with 1975's "Born to Run" is No. 3, followed by the Rolling Stones' 1969 song "Gimmie Shelter" and Pink Floyd's 1979 hit "Comfortably Numb" at No. 5.
