Ali Larijani, one of the most influential figures in Iran’s political establishment, has been killed, marking the departure of a key power broker who shaped major decisions for decades. Known as a conservative yet pragmatic politician, he often played a balancing role among competing factions within the system.

Born in 1957 in Najaf into a prominent religious family, Larijani rose within a network that held significant influence after Iran’s Islamic Revolution. His family’s deep ties to the ruling structure helped cement his position in the country’s political hierarchy.

Educated in computer science at Sharif University of Technology and later earning a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Tehran, Larijani stood out for combining technical expertise with intellectual depth, an uncommon profile among Iranian politicians.

He began his career in key state institutions, eventually serving as head of Iran’s state broadcasting organization before becoming secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, one of the country’s most critical decision-making bodies.

Larijani’s most notable tenure came during his 12-year leadership of parliament, the longest in its history, where he managed complex relations between legislative and other branches of power during periods of internal and external pressure.

Iran’s political system is dominated by interconnected institutions where figures like Larijani often hold multiple roles across legislative, security, and strategic bodies, shaping both domestic and foreign policy directions.

Over the years, Iran has faced mounting international pressure, particularly over its nuclear program and regional policies, placing senior officials like Larijani at the center of sensitive negotiations and crisis management efforts.

Larijani also played a significant role in foreign policy, including involvement in nuclear negotiations that led to the 2015 agreement and later oversight of Iran’s long-term strategic cooperation deal with China. In recent years, he returned to a senior security role, reinforcing his influence during a tense political climate.

Supporters viewed him as an experienced crisis manager capable of navigating complex challenges, while critics saw him as part of a power structure linked to political restrictions and suppression of dissent.

His death removes a central figure from Iran’s power structure, potentially reshaping internal dynamics at a time of heightened political and security tensions.
