Sesko 4 Man City 1: Man Utd striker puts Pep Guardiola’s side to shame with dazzling stat
Manchester United have had a good revival under interim manager Michael Carrick since January.
The Red Devils have picked up 22 points from nine Premier League matches since he took charge.
This is more than league leaders Arsenal (21) in the same period. The onus will be on keeping up the good form to qualify for the Champions League next season.
United are third in the table with a three-point lead over Aston Villa. They also have a five and six-point advantage over Liverpool and Chelsea, respectively.
Benjamin Sesko has played a big part in the turnaround. The Slovenian has netted five goals under Carrick’s tutelage, with four of those off the bench.
According to Opta Analyst, Sesko has scored four of United’s five goals off the bench this campaign, highlighting his significant contribution as a substitute.
On the contrary, Manchester City are rock-bottom in that aspect. Pep Guardiola’s side have bagged just one goal through a substitute in the top-flight this term.
That came way back in August when Tijjani Reijnders netted in a 4-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Since then, no one has scored for the Cityzens as a substitute.
Man City had Reijnders, Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki come on in the second half against West Ham United on Sunday, but failed to score in a 1-1 draw.
In our opinion, this is quite an embarrassing statistic for a club challenging Arsenal for the league title.
The Cityzens are currently nine points adrift of the Gunners for the top spot with a game in hand.
Based on Man City’s poor showing in the second half of games, it seems likelier by the day that the Gunners will end their two-decade-long wait for the English crown.
Meanwhile, Sesko has started to prove his immense potential. The 22-year-old has silenced his critics with his goalscoring exploits in his cameo appearances this year.
He has already accumulated 10 goals since his summer move from RB Leipzig and should only get better in his second season, having adapted to the league’s intensity.
