The Best Movie of 2026 Is Coming to Netflix This Month—After Bombing at the Box Office
Nia DaCosta's 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple will finally make its streaming debut on Netflix on March 31, just two months after its underwhelming run in theaters.
The film is the third sequel in Danny Boyle's acclaimed 28 Days series, directly following the events of last year's 28 Years Later. The reins were passed to DaCosta for this sequel, marking the first time Boyle hasn't directed an entry since 2007's disappointing 28 Weeks Later.
The film sees Alfie Williams reprise his lead role as Spike, a young boy separated from his community and forced to endure the horrors of a zombie apocalypse among a group of murderous outlaws known as 'The Jimmies'. Their leader, Sir Jimmy Crystal, is played by Jack O'Connell.
The movie also sees the return of Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Kelson, the reclusive exile whom Spike and his mother went searching for in the previous installment. He's given a much larger role in this entry, playing the joint lead alongside Williams and O'Connell.
Despite opening to a disappointing $12 million in the U.S. and crawling to $57 million worldwide—which didn't even cover its reported $63 million budget—The Bone Temple recieved strong reviews from critics and general audiences alike.
DaCosta's visual style is extremely distinct from the foundations that Boyle previously established, but this simply works in the sequel's favor. It feels like a totally individual, separate story that stands on its own merits and presents a biting, thought-provoking story about humanity and compassion.
The film explores how different people react to the complete dissolution of a societal framework—whether that's searching for meaning, a total focus on self-preservation, or a complete descent into violence and anarchy.
For those who missed 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple in theaters, it won't be long until the film is available to watch at home at no extra cost. The film will be added to Netflix's ever-growing catalog on March 31 in the United States.
Alternatively, those without a Netflix subscription can buy or rent The Bone Temple on most VOD platforms—including Prime Video and Apple TV. The film will also be released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on April 21.
