Planned Parenthood Abandoned Plans to Turn This School Into an Abortion Center
Plans by the Virginia League for Planned Parenthood to convert a former Northside school building into an abortion center have been abandoned.
The decision spares the community from what pro-life advocates viewed as an expansion of abortion subsidized by taxpayer-supported property.
The deal, approved by Richmond City Council in July 2024, would have sold the former Brook Hill School property at 4929 Chamberlayne Ave to Planned Parenthood for only $10. The city had declared the site surplus, with an assessed value of $1.36 million, to reflect the city’s commitment to protecting and promoting abortion locally following the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade.

The transaction never closed, and the property remains in city hands, now available to other buyers.
A city spokesperson, Michael Hinkle, said: “The city has no immediate plans for the property, and it remains available for disposition.”
Because the deal fell through, the city will update its surplus list to include the property.
Virginia Planned Parenthood leader Paulette McElwain attributed the decision not to proceed primarily to financial reasons, including federal efforts to defund the radical abortion organization and high construction costs.
She added that the organization remains committed to killing babies in abortions.
The $10 sale price drew criticism from pro-life activists, who argued the city was giving away public property to a politically favored group. And pro-life activists mounted a legal challenge arguing the city had not followed its own rules for selling public property, though the lawsuit was dismissed on technical grounds without addressing the allegation.
Pro-life advocates celebrated the outcome as a victory against what they saw as a giveaway of public property to expand abortion services.
