Phillies’ Johan Rojas suspended 80 games after failing drug test
Phillies outfielder Johan Rojas has officially been suspended 80 games after failing a a performance-enhancing-drug test, Major League Baseball announced Monday.
Rojas tested positive for Boldenone, a banned substance. The failed test will sideline him without pay until June 25. He was in competition for a spot on Philadelphia’s bench during spring training and was originally supposed to play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic this month. Rojas will be banned from postseason competition in 2026, should the Phillies qualify.
A defensive specialist with a strong glove, Rojas provided a spark when he was promoted to the majors straight from Double-A in 2023. But the light-hitting center fielder never replicated his early offensive results. In three major-league seasons, Rojas has batted .252 with six home runs and a .633 OPS, leading to diminished opportunities. He was sent to the minors when the Phillies acquired Harrison Bader at the 2025 trade deadline, and the team seems poised to name prospect Justin Crawford its starting center fielder for this season.
Still, Rojas has a skill set that can be useful in a limited role, and the Phillies are now quite thin in center field with the 25-year-old set to miss a large portion of the season.
Rojas is now the third member of the 2025 Phillies to be suspended for PEDs. Reliever José Alvarado served an 80-game suspension during last season, and outfielder Max Kepler, now a free agent, was suspended for 80 games in January.
