National Weather Service Warns of 'Dangerous' Heat Wave Set to Shatter Records

A dangerous heat wave in Southern California is expected to send temperatures soaring this week — and meteorologists say the unusual early-season heat could break multiple records.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures across the region may climb as much as 35 degrees above normal, pushing some inland areas into the triple digits over the next several days, per the California Post.

Forecasters say the hottest stretch of the Southern California heat wave will likely hit Tuesday through Friday, with conditions becoming especially intense inland.

Temperatures Expected to Climb Past 100 Degrees

The heat is already building.

High temperatures across much of Los Angeles and surrounding areas are expected to reach the mid-90s Monday, before climbing even higher later in the week.

By Wednesday, some parts of Southern California could see temperatures in the low 100s, according to the National Weather Service.

“Temperatures will continue to be warm overnight and may not provide much relief from heat stress,” NWS Los Angeles wrote in a post on X, warning that daily — and possibly even monthly — March temperature records could be broken.

Why This Early-Season Heat Wave Is Raising Concerns

Meteorologists say the timing of the heat wave is one of the biggest concerns.

March temperatures in coastal Southern California typically stay in the upper 60s, occasionally creeping into the low 70s — making this week’s forecast far outside the seasonal norm.

“This is earlier in the year, so our bodies in the area aren’t used to these high temperatures,” Rose Schoenfeld, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, told ABC7 Los Angeles.

“That time of year is significant, so we do have concerns that people who work outside, people without air conditioning, and those who are more vulnerable — including the very young and the elderly — could face heat-related issues.”

Because the heat wave is arriving so early in the season, forecasters warn there is an elevated risk of heat illness across the region.

“There will be a high risk for heat illness for everyone — especially in locations away from the coast. If you or someone you know is at risk for heat-related problems, please make cooling plans now for the rest of this week,” the National Weather Service warned.

Safety Tips During the Southern California Heat Wave

Officials are urging residents across Southern California to take precautions as temperatures climb.

Experts recommend the following:

  • Drinking plenty of water throughout the day
  • Spending time in air-conditioned spaces when possible
  • Avoiding strenuous outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Checking on neighbors, family members, and vulnerable residents

Meteorologists also warn residents to never leave children or pets inside parked cars, even for short periods.

Vehicle temperatures can rise to dangerous and potentially deadly levels within minutes, especially during extreme heat.

Residents are also encouraged to learn the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which can become serious medical emergencies.

What’s Causing the Unusual Heat

Forecasters say the Southern California heat wave is being driven by a strong high-pressure system parked over the region.

The system acts like a lid on the atmosphere, trapping heat near the surface and allowing temperatures to steadily rise over several days.

At the same time, winds are expected to stay relatively light, with weak offshore breezes in the morning and mild onshore flow in the afternoon — meaning there will be little natural cooling.

Because the pattern is slow-moving, meteorologists expect the intense heat to linger through the end of the week.
