India’s Odisha Hospital Fire Kills 10, Injures Five in Trauma Unit Blaze
Officials in India confirmed that at least 10 patients died in a fire that broke out in the trauma unit of an Odisha hospital, causing widespread panic.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday, March 16, according to Reuters, with hospital staff scrambling to evacuate patients and control the rapidly spreading flames.
In addition to the fatalities, five patients were severely injured during the fire and required urgent treatment at nearby medical facilities to stabilize their conditions.
Preliminary reports indicate that the fire was likely caused by an electrical short circuit in the trauma center, raising concerns about hospital infrastructure and safety measures.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said that at least 23 patients were receiving intensive care at the time, and 10 lost their lives during emergency evacuation.
Medical and security personnel risked their own lives to rescue patients, ensuring that many were safely moved to secure areas away from the fire zone.
Authorities have announced that hospital safety protocols and fire-prevention measures will be reviewed immediately to prevent similar tragedies in hospitals across the state of Odisha.
