King Charles III hasn’t enjoyed a scandal-free year yet since taking the throne in 2022 — and now, there are calls for him to step down.
Royal expert Andrew Lownie, author of Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, believes the palace is trying hard to “get away with putting a lid” on Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
“The fact that the Palace may have been complicit in perverting the course of justice seems to be a huge story,” he claimed to Woman’s Day. And, Lownie is not messing around when he thinks about what should happen next.
”I think the King should step down, I think he is compromised, but I don’t think he will,” he added.
Knowing that Charles “waited a long time for this job,” Lownie doesn’t think the monarch will “give it up without a huge fuss.” The royal author isn’t the only one who says it’s time for Charles to step aside in the wake of his brother’s ties to Epstein.
Former royal butler Paul Burrell said the exact same thing after the ex-Prince Andrew was arrested in February.
“Inside those palace walls, they need to show the public that they care, they need to show the public that they are dealing with this. No more fluffing around and no more excuses. I really think it’s time for decisive action with our monarchy, otherwise we’ll lose it,” he said on Piers Morgan’s show, Uncensored.
Prince William was reportedly the one who wanted to go “much further, much earlier” when it came to punishing his uncle, but Andrew has been treated with kid gloves by his now-deceased mother and elder brother for years.
The Prince of Wales was reportedly the “real architect” of Andrew’s downfall within royal ranks last fall, per Rob Shuter’s Substack, Naughty But Nice. “William made it clear this couldn’t drag on any longer,” a palace insider alleged. “He told his father that if Andrew didn’t go quietly, the family’s image would never recover.”
With public cries from royalists for King Charles to step down, Andrew’s controversy might be too great for his legacy to overcome. The damage has been done.
