Arnold Schwarzenegger Named 2026 Don Wildman Commitment to Excellence Award Winner by NASM
Arnold Schwarzenegger may have first stepped onto the bodybuilding stage over 50 years ago, but he continues to shape the world of fitness. Through his Pump Club daily newsletter and app, the ever-growing Arnold Sports Festival, and decades of advocacy around public health, Schwarzenegger is the true original fitness "influencer." Now, the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) announced that the legend will be the well-deserved recipient of its 2026 Don Wildman Commitment to Excellence Award.
The annual award recognizes fitness pioneers who embody the same spirit of innovation and determination that defined Wildman, the founder of Bally Total Fitness. Few people fit that description better than Schwarzenegger. He built one of the most dominant competitive careers in bodybuilding history, winning seven Mr. Olympia titles and five Mr. Universe championships, while helping push bodybuilding from a niche sport into the mainstream.
"I’ve always seen the gym as more than just a place to train; it’s where you build the vision for your life," Arnold Schwarzenegger said in a press release. "Don Wildman was a true original who embodied a lifelong commitment to fitness, one that allowed him to live life to the fullest. Receiving an award in his name from NASM is a great honor. It reminds us to keep challenging ourselves and to support the next generation in fulfilling their potential."
But Schwarzenegger’s influence has long extended beyond the bodybuilding stage. Over the years, he's effectively used his platform to promote physical activity and public health on a massive scale. His work with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports helped champion youth fitness initiatives, while his involvement with organizations like After-School All-Stars aims to expand access to health and wellness resources for the youth.
"Arnold’s path to becoming a global symbol of fitness embodies the ‘build life’ approach we champion at NASM," said Mehul Patel, CEO of NASM. "As our field moves toward longevity and cognitive wellbeing, Arnold continues to inspire generations to stay strong, active, and capable at every age. We are honored to celebrate the lasting impact he has made on the industry and beyond."
