'Firefly' Animated Revival Announced with Original Cast Returning
After almost 25 years, the crew of Serenity is boarding the ship again.
Following years of campaigning for a revival by fans of the cult-classic sci-fi show, Firefly is set to be back on screens again, but as an animated show. On the last day of AwesomeCon 2026 in Washington, D.C., Nathan Fillion announced that Firefly is set to have an animated revival and is far along in development.
A Cult Classic Born from Early Cancellation
The original Firefly aired in 2002 and was created by Joss Whedon for FOX network. It was cancelled after only 11 episodes aired out of 14 due to low ratings, but developed a cult fanbase in the years that followed through DVD release and streaming. The sci-fi show chronicled the lives of nine outlaw crew members aboard the ship Serenity in the year 2517, and often dealt with the political and moral issues of society at large.
All Hands on Deck: Original Cast Returns for Animated Revival
The announcement came as part of a panel that served as a live taping of the podcast "Once We Were Spacemen" that Fillion runs with his show costar Alan Tudyk. The original cast is set to voice their characters, including Fillion as Mal, Tudyk as Wash, Gina Torres as Zoe, Jewel Staite as Kaylee, Morena Baccarin as Inara, Sean Maher as Simon, Summer Glau as River, and Adam Baldwin as Jayne.
In a video posted on the Once We Were Spacemen Instagram, they said they got Joss Whedon's blessing and secured the rights, with Tara Butters and Marc Guggenheim set as showrunners.
The project's working title appears to be "Firefly: Still Flying" with the first episode titled "Athenia," written by the showrunner duo. Preliminary concept art has been developed by Academy Award and Emmy-nominated animation studio ShadowMachine, with Fillion's own production house Collision33 serving as the developer, in partnership with the rights holder, 20th Television Animation.
Fans Prove the Demand as Search for a Network Begins
The remaining puzzle piece is a network to house the show. The cast took to Instagram to urge fans to like the post and spread the word in order to prove the demand.
The project would mark Fillion's first TV production for Collision33. Other work from the company includes the podcast Once We Were Spacemen and comic book series, Witness Point.
The announcement followed a campaign by the cast, mostly posted through their socials: a series of reels since late February where Fillion tells different cast members to "get ready." The videos have garnered millions of views, with the most recent one getting over 800,000 likes, which helped build publicity before the live announcement.
The series is set in the timeline between the original show's run and the 2005 sequel film Serenity.
Fans are flooding the comments on the cast's social media pages, with longtime followers and casual viewers alike sharing their excitement.
"The dedication of Firefly fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant. Clearly, the return of Firefly is something the fans want. More importantly, it's something they deserve," Fillion told Deadline.
