Paul Thomas Anderson Wins Best Director as One Battle After Another Sweeps Oscars
Paul Thomas Anderson’s political thriller-comedy One Battle After Another emerged as the biggest winner at the 2026 Academy Awards, taking home six Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director.
The film, inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland, also won Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing and Best Casting. Sean Penn secured Best Supporting Actor, marking his first acting Oscar after years of nominations.
In his acceptance speech, Anderson said he wrote the film for his children, apologizing for “the chaos we leave behind” and expressing hope that younger generations restore “common sense and decency.”
Another major winner of the night was Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, which claimed four awards. Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor for his dual role, while the film also earned Best Original Screenplay, Cinematography and Original Score.
Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for the Shakespearean drama Hamnet, her first Academy Award. Meanwhile, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein dominated several technical categories including costume design, production design and makeup.
The animated film KPop Demon Hunters won both of its nominations, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. Other notable winners included Sentimental Value for Best International Feature and the documentary Mr Nobody Against Putin for Best Documentary.
The Academy Awards, presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, remain the most prestigious honors in the global film industry, recognizing excellence in filmmaking since the ceremony began in 1929.
The 2026 ceremony blended artistic achievements with subtle political undertones, featuring anti-war remarks and discussions about freedom of expression, reflecting the wider cultural debates shaping the film industry today.
Overall, the night belonged to Anderson, whose long-awaited Oscar triumph marked a major milestone in his career after decades of critical acclaim and multiple nominations.
