How Many Oscars Did ‘Sinners’ Win at the 2026 Academy Awards?
From the outset, Sinners has been one of the hot favorites at this year's 98th Academy Awards. The vampire flick, directed by Ryan Coogler, was a hit with critics and audiences alike from its release last April.
Coogler, of course, is no stranger to the Oscars. Across his 5 films, the 39-year-old's filmography has been nominated for a staggering 29 nominations: 1 for Creed (2015), 7 for Black Panther (2018), 5 for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), and a record-breaking 16 for Sinners, making the horror film the most-nominated film in Academy Awards history.
Sinners, set in 1930s Mississippi during the Jim Crow South, sees twin veterans Elijah "Smoke" and Elias "Stack" Moore (both played by Michael B. Jordan) return to their hometown following several years working for the Chicago mob. The twins, with the help of their cousin Sammie (Miles Caton), a sharecropper and son of a pastor with dreams of playing the blues, attempt to set up a local juke joint, primarily targeted at African-American residents of the community.
However, plans to enrich the town's culture and make a profit go haywire after the return of several familiar faces, including the twins' ex-partners, Mary (Hailee Steinfeld) and Annie (Wunmi Mosaku), as well as local legendary musician Delta Slim (Delroy Lindo), intermingle, re-igniting buried tensions within the group. To make matters worse, a group of vampires descends on the joint, turning the night into a battle for their souls and the triumph of good over evil.
Sinners' 16 nominations include: Best Picture, Best Director (Coogler), Best Actor (Jordan), Best Supporting Actor (Lindo), Best Supporting Actress (Mosaku), Best Original Screenplay (Coogler), Best Cinematography (Autumn Durald Arkapaw), Best Film Editing (Michael P. Shawver), Best Costume Design (Ruth E. Burtt, Felipe Pacheco, Brandon Proctor, and Steve Boeddekerand), Best Visual Effects (Michael Ralla, Espen Nordahl, Guido Wolter, and Donnie Dean) the new category of Best Casting (Francine Maisler).
How Many Oscars Did 'Sinners' Win?
Sinners won 4 out of the 16 awards it was nominated for — including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Best Original Screenplay for Ryan Coogler, Best Cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapaw, and Best Original Score for Ludwig Göransson.
The horror film may have won only a quarter of the awards it was nominated for, but the movie still ended up among the most-awarded of the night, alongside One Battle After Another, Frankenstein, and others.
Autumn Durald Arkapaw also won special, aside from the coveted golden statue, becoming the first woman to ever win Best Cinematography. Only four women have ever been nominated in the category.
