CLASS OF 2025-26 | MEET LUTHER WILLIAMS

Luther Williams is in his second season with Dartford following his arrival at the beginning of last season.

The defender hit the ground running last term, making 43 appearances in all competitions, of which 38 saw him named in the starting eleven. However, he has found the competition for places tougher this season and has made just twelve starts (18 appearances in total).

Despite the slim pickings, Luther remains positive and is pleased to have remained at Princes Park.

“I re-signed for the club because the gaffer, Ady, sold me the project and the ambition of the club. I believe I can contribute to what he’s trying to achieve, and I feel that the club remains a great fit for me.”

As he’s mentioned his belief in being able to contribute to what Ady and his squad are trying to achieve, just what does Luther bring to the team?

“I believe that my knowledge and understanding of the game sets me apart from other players. My ability to read the game and my pace also help. Defensively, my pace is probably my biggest contribution because it allows us to play a high line. It means I can cover balls in behind, acting as a sweeper when needed.”

He continues, “Included with my reading of the game and pace is my versatility. I can play in multiple positions, although Centre-Half is my favourite position. However, I’m not as strong as I’d like to be in attacking and defending set pieces. But I’m still young and learning.”

Has he learnt anything valuable from his time in the beautiful game?

“I’d say the biggest thing I’ve learnt is how to communicate effectively. Whether that’s with teammates, gaffers, or coaches. Communication is a skill you can carry into any part of your life.”

And what about challenges? Has Luther faced any challenges during his playing career so far?

“I think the biggest challenge any footballer will face is rejection. Whether that’s not being selected, being released or let go by a club. Every player will face that at some point, and it’s about having the mental strength and self-belief to push through and know you can achieve your goals.”

Speaking of which… what are Luther’s goals for this season and his career?

“My main goal this season is to achieve promotion. I think we still have a good chance of achieving that. We’re one of the stronger teams in the division and, with the talent we have in the changing room, I believe we can achieve it.

“For me personally, one of my career goals is to return to playing professionally. I came through an Academy system, so I know what it’s like to be a professional player. I want to get back to playing full-time football.”

How does he deal with the balancing act of playing, training, and working?

“The hardest thing is staying disciplined. It’s so easy to spend our limited free time doing things we shouldn’t. So maintaining focus is key.

“I do go to the gym three times a week, and I tailor my sessions depending on our match schedule and how my body feels. I like to stay as fit as possible. I stay motivated by setting myself goals. I’m driven by achieving them and I have that desire to improve myself.”

Like his peers, Luther also looks forward to booking his holidays at the end of the season, so that he can relax, recuperate, and switch off from the game. Yet the pull of the game is strong due to his love of it…

“I love football because I enjoy it. I love the thrill of being on the pitch, meeting new people, and forming friendships I also love how playing can take my mind off things and act as a release.”

That statement is also true for those of us on the sidelines. Whether we’re staff, volunteers, or supporters, a football club is a community which buzzes with friendships and the escape from daily life. They’re a vital part of our lives, and the thrill felt when your players walk out onto the pitch at 3pm is unmatched.

How does Luther approach those match days?

“I approach them very routinely to be honest. I stick to the same match prep meal and the same routine so that I can mentally prepare and focus.”

Has he ever received any advice that he tries to live by?

“The best advice I’ve received is to stay level-headed. Never get too high or too low. Don’t let the highs of football make you complacent, and don’t let the lows bring you down. Always stay grounded.”

Does Luther have any advice of his own for the younger generation?

“I’d say watch players that play your position at a higher level and see what they do better than you. Then you can work on that. Once you know your game and where it needs developing, you can work on becoming better. Also, stay disciplined and remain focused on your goals. If you put in the work and maintain that focus, you can achieve a lot.”

Wise words indeed from someone who knows what it takes to play in today’s game. Let’s hope that we see more of him in a Dartford shirt for the foreseeable future.
