All About Rose Byrne & Bobby Cannavale's Relationship After That Golden Globes Drama
After nearly a decade-and-a-half together, Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale are just as cute together now as they were on their first red-carpet appearance in 2013. The If I Had Legs I’d Kick You star shares two sons with Cannavale, and while he doesn’t always visit at her awards shows, it’s clear how much he loves her.
All About Rose Byrne & Bobby Cannavale’s Relationship
The couple started dating in 2012 and sparked relationship rumors after they were spotted holding hands in December of the same year, per People. They officially made their red-carpet debut at the CFDA Fashion Awards in June 2013.
They welcomed two kids in 2016 and 2017. Marriage remained in the back of their minds, and in July 2021, Byrne explained why. “I keep going, ‘Let’s get around to it, let’s do it,’” the Bridesmaids star told The Sydney Morning Herald. “And then, you know, you have a baby, and then, oh, there’s another baby. It was kind of like that for us. I love weddings, and I know people [for whom] it’s an important thing, and I respect that totally. I guess for us it’s just been, we didn’t do it, we’ll do it, then — no! Pandemic.”
In a Nov. 2025 interview with The Washington Post, Byrne revealed that she considers herself married to Cannavale, despite never making it official. “I say ‘married,’” Byrne told the outlet. “We just haven’t gone to the courthouse yet, but we’re married.”
Byrne & Cannavale Act Together
Byrne and Cannavale aren’t just in a relationship — they are also co-stars. They have starred in Annie, Adult Beginners, Spy, Seriously Red, and Ezra.
“[Acting together] is a very intense thing you can experience together,” Byrne told People in 2015. “It’s not for everybody, but I think he’s such a great actor.”
Despite acting together, Byrne and Cannavale don’t often do press together. “I mean, it’s not something we do all the time, but we’re trying to go with the flow,” Byrne said in a Dec. 2019 interview with Vanity Fair. “We’re generally pretty private.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Cannavale revealed he likes acting with Byrne so he can simply spend more time with her. “It starts out as a very pragmatic thing,” he told the outlet. “You have the kids, the kids are getting bigger, and you don’t want to spend the time apart.”
And he’s totally cool with the fact that Byrne makes more money than he does. “I make half as much as she does,” Cannavale said. “Down the middle. Half. I work too much in the theater, perhaps.”

Byrne & Cannavale Are Parent to Two Kids
The actors share two sons, Rocco Robin, born in 2016, and Rafael “Rafa,” born in 2017. The Boardwalk Empire star, who is also dad to an adult son, Jake, from a previous relationship, later shared the origins of their two sons’ names.
“We just love the name,” Cannavale told People in 2016. “His middle name is [Byrne’s] dad’s name, Robin, and we liked the way it rang together.”
After their son Rafa was born, the Ferdinand star shared why he wanted to pass down a name from his side of the family. “I hadn’t given one of my children a Latin name yet, so I wanted to honor my mom’s side of the family,” Cannavale told Entertainment Tonight. “And, you know, Rafael Nadal had such a great year, and we were constantly keeping up with him and watching all his matches, so we were like, ‘How about Rafa? That goes well with Rocco.’ And that was it.”
Cannavale Skipped Byrne’s Golden Globes Win
Just because Cannavale is hugely supportive of Byrne doesn’t mean he is always physically present with her. Enter: the 2026 Golden Globes drama.
When Byrne won Best Performance by a Female Actor for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You in January, she gave a controversial shout-out to her husband. “I want to thank my husband, Bobby Cannavale, he couldn’t be here because we’re getting a bearded dragon and he went to a reptile expo in New Jersey. Thank you, baby!” she said during her acceptance speech, per Us Weekly.
The moment sparked controversy because people were upset that Cannavale missed her big moment. It went viral, so Byrne addressed it in a Feb. 22 interview with The New York Times.
“Never in my life will I announce something like that on a major awards show again,” Byrne told the outlet. “Everyone was thinking it’s for Bobby. It’s not! It’s for our children. The children.”
She also noted that Cannavale will be attending the Oscars with her, so he will be by her side if she wins big.
