Chris Waddle has delivered a blunt verdict on Cristian Romero’s future at Tottenham Hotspur, insisting the club should consider moving the defender on regardless of how their season ends.
Cristian Romero is often seen as a polarising figure at Tottenham Hotspur. The Argentine, on his day, is one of the best in the world in his position, but when he struggles, it can be just as bad.
Yellow cards, red cards, and even calling out the board at Tottenham – name it, and that is exactly what you get from the Argentine.
Whether that is passion or recklessness is up for debate, but Spurs were keen to keep their man in the summer and did just that, tying him down to a new contract.

Chris Waddle has now made a bold claim advising Tottenham on what they should do with their captain ahead of the summer window.
The former Spurs man is far from convinced that Romero is what the club needs at the moment and has urged them to cash in on him, whether Tottenham stay in the Premier League or are relegated.
Speaking to Ozoon about the defender, Waddle explained why he believes Romero divides opinion among supporters and questioned his discipline and long-term commitment to the club.
He said: “He is Marmite, Cristian Romero. Some of the fans like him, and some of the fans hate him. When I read certain chats, a lot of the fans say he is 100% committed, he puts his foot in, he gives his all, but the majority think he is a liability. Personally, he gets too many yellows and too many reds.
“Listen, they had a great opportunity to sell him last season, did they not? I thought they were going to. And let us be honest, he does not really want to be here.
“He is staying with a new contract because it was a good contract, and he got the captaincy, and he got a lot of money. He has never looked, body language-wise, like he wants to be at Tottenham Hotspur.
“Personally, I would have got rid of him. And listen, if they go down, which I hope they do not, I really do like Tottenham, I would still be looking to cash in on the market in the summer.
“If he has a good World Cup, you will get a few offers. So he would be a player they should move on.”
Spurs face major decision on Cristian Romero amid transfer interest
Romero is already attracting interest from sides across Europe ahead of the summer window. We reported yesterday that the Spurs captain is open to a sale this summer.
The likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are the ones currently in the race for Romero.
Atleti, however, are said to be pushing the most, while Spurs are not looking to lose Romero on the cheap.
It is explained that Tottenham will demand a fee in excess of £60 million for the World Cup winner.
