National Weather Service Issues 'Stay Inside' Warning as Blizzard, 30 Inches of Snow Approach

Spring is fast approaching, but winter weather came in strong for several states across the country this week, hitting some regions with up to 30 inches of snow. While the first wave of the storm passed on Sunday morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) warns that the dangerous conditions are not over.

In a series of warnings on Sunday morning, the NWS warned of "blizzard conditions" as the wind began to pick up in the region. As a result of the dangerous conditions, those in the area have been warned to "stay indoors until conditions improve."

Winter Storm Brings Heavy Snow

On Saturday night into Sunday morning, a winter storm struck parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes region, bringing heavy snow of up to 30 inches in some regions, cold temperatures, and extremely strong winds to several states, with Wisconsin, South Dakota, and Michigan getting the strongest of the storm.

Following the first wave of snow, the NWS expects winds to increase, setting up "blizzard conditions."

"The first round of this winter storm is beginning to exit the area late this morning which will leave a brief lull across the area for the late morning and early afternoon. During this period, winds will begin to increase with wind gusts of 40 to 55 mph by the early evening," the NWS wrote in its advisory on Sunday morning.

"This will result in blizzard conditions where a Blizzard Warning is in effect. Dangerous travel conditions are expected during this period, particularly north of Interstate 90 where snowfall totals of 12 to 24 inches will see significant drifting with the increasing winds," the advisory continued.

After a lull in precipitation throughout the late morning and early afternoon, the NWS warns that more snow is coming.

"A secondary round of accumulating snow will move into the region late this afternoon and into the morning hours on Monday," the NWS warned.

'Stay Indoors'

The strong winds added to the already bitterly cold temperatures create a dangerous situation for anyone outside in those conditions. As a result, the NWS issued a "stay inside" warning as the blizzard conditions approached.

"Persons are urged to stay indoors until conditions improve," the NWS warned on Sunday morning. "If you must go outside, dress in layers. Several layers of clothes will keep you warmer than a single heavy coat. Cover exposed skin to reduce your risk of frostbite or hypothermia. Gloves, a scarf, and a hat will keep you from losing your body heat."

It should go without saying, but traveling in these conditions could be difficult or nearly impossible. As a result, the NWS warned to "delay all travel" and only use the road if absolutely necessary.

"Persons should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary," the NWS warned.

These conditions are expected to last into the afternoon on Monday, which means that those in the region should be prepared to stay inside until then and allow the dangerous conditions to subside a bit, if at all possible.

The NWS warns that these winter weather conditions are especially dangerous for newborns, the elderly, those with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers, and unhoused individuals.

“Everyone is at risk from the dangers of extreme cold, but these groups are more vulnerable than most. Age and certain conditions make the body less able to regulate temperature,” the NWS warns.

The NWS advised people to limit time outside, but to wear loose layers and cover all skin if they do have to venture outdoors. Additionally, the NWS advises people to consume hot foods and warm drinks, but avoid caffeine and alcohol.
