Journalist forced to apologise to Cristian Romero after being left with egg on his face
Cristian Romero received heavy criticism from a journalist after Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat to Atletico Madrid, but they have since backtracked on their statement slamming the defender.
Tottenham Hotspur were appalling against Atletico Madrid, and even with the second leg still to come, it seems the club are bound to exit the Champions League.
Spurs did manage to come up with a couple of decent moments in attack, but they made some shocking errors at the back, which gifted Atletico a 5-2 victory.
Antonin Kinsky was the main player to come under a lot of criticism, but Cristian Romero also came in for some stick due to what he did after the game had ended.
Journalist slams Cristian Romero for failing to give a post-match Tottenham interview
Romero was not a player specifically at fault for any of Atletico’s goals, but he will have been disappointed by being part of a Tottenham defensive line that conceded five times.
However, the 27-year-old was slammed by a Brazilian reporter for refusing to speak to the media after the match.
In a loaded rant, Fred Caldeira took aim at Romero, as he called for the centre-back to be stripped of the Tottenham captaincy.
The journalist told TNT Sports Brasil: “Romero doesn’t deserve to wear the captain’s armband at Tottenham.
“It’s very easy to be brave when things are going well. Cristian Romero should have given an interview today. It was his obligation as captain.”
Caldeira then went on to compare Romero’s absence to the behaviour of other Premier League skippers.
“You value when you see Virgil van Dijk speaking at Liverpool, or players who have faced the media during difficult years at Manchester United,” he continued.
Archie Gray, Djed Spence and Kevin Danso were the only players Caldeira saw giving interviews, causing his criticism for Romero to continue.
He added: “He’s not the main culprit for what’s happening, but he’s also not someone who is helping. At the very least, he should face the situation, and he isn’t doing that.”

It was only later on that Caldeira realised Romero had to leave the pitch shortly before full-time, due to suffering a head knock with Joao Palhinha.
This left the harsh critic with egg on his face, and he quickly took to social media to apologise to the Tottenham captain for the unfortunate misunderstanding.
Calderia wrote: “I committed an injustice with Romero. I have to leave the pitch minutes before the final whistle to reach the post-match interviews in time, so I didn’t see the head collision between Romero and Palhinha. Clearly, he was not in condition to give interviews.”
Hopefully, Caldeira has learnt his lesson not to judge a player before understanding the situation as a whole.
