Fergusson Returns: Forward Battles Back to Rejoin Big Barrel Hawks
The Big Barrel Hawks have confirmed the return of Hawke’s Bay forward Tommy Fergusson, completing one of the most determined comeback stories in the club’s recent history.
After battling through two ACL reconstructions, Fergusson is set to return to the Sal’s NBL court, a journey that has tested his resilience, commitment and love for the game.
Standing 203cm, Fergusson first made his mark as a young player representing Napier Boys’ High School before earning selection to the Junior Tall Blacks in 2020, highlighting his potential at the national level. His performances at age-group level also saw him recognised nationally, earning Tournament Team honours at both the U19 and U23 National Championships.
Fergusson’s career, however, has been shaped by adversity. After suffering his first ACL injury in 2022, he committed himself to a long rehabilitation process and worked his way back onto the court.
His return was immediate and impressive. Fergusson quickly re-established himself within the Hawks programme and was leading the Rapid League MVP race, showing the impact he can have. Just as momentum was building, misfortune struck again, a second ACL injury in 2024 forcing him back into another demanding rehabilitation process.
Rather than stepping away from the game, Fergusson again committed himself to the grind of recovery, determined to earn his way back to the court.
Big Barrel Hawks General Manager Jarrod Kenny said Fergusson’s journey reflects the mindset he has. “To come back from one ACL reconstruction is tough, to battle through two takes a serious level of resilience. Tommy has shown real determination to get himself back to this point and that says a lot about his character.”
For Fergusson, the opportunity to represent Hawke’s Bay again is something he does not take lightly. “It’s been a long road getting back, but I’m grateful for the opportunity to play again. Representing Hawke’s Bay means a lot to me and I’m excited to get back out there and help the team however I can.”
Fergusson’s return adds another determined competitor to a squad building towards defending the nest at Rodney Green Arenas and pushing for championship contention.
Fergusson now joins Alonzo Burton, Kobe Kara, Isaac Allan, Keanu Rasmussen, Clifton Bush III, Balin Casson and Dan Grida as other rostered players signed to date for the 2026 season.
