Sarah Michelle Gellar Gives Shocking Update on Buffy Reboot That No One Expected
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was set to finally return to our screens after over 20 years; but all of that is gone.
Back in Feb 2025, Deadline reported that a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was in the works with Hulu. The star herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, was expected to reprise her role as Buffy Summers. Along with that, Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao was set to direct the pilot, also written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. Ryan Kiera Armstrong was set to be the new slayer for the show.
However, on March 14, Gellar shared a video on her Instagram about the future of the Buffy reboot and how it’s not moving forward. She shared the video with the caption reading, “If the apocalypse comes… you can still beep me.”
“So I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with ‘Buffy: New Sunnnydale,’” she began. “I want to thank Chloé Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots.”
She ended by saying, “And thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means, not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.”
As you can imagine, many fans are heartbroken about this update.
