Sarah Michelle Gellar Announces ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale’ Is Over
Hulu has cancelled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale before it even aired.
Rather than a reboot, New Sunnydale would have been a continuation of the original Buffy series that ended 25 years ago. The plot would have followed Buffy Summers as she trains a new vampire slayer.
Sarah Michelle Gellar posted a video confirming the news to her Instagram, saying:
“I am really sad to have to share this but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy/New Sunnydale.”
She then thanked esteemed director Chloé Zhao, who directed and executive produced the show. Zhao is one of only three women to win the Academy Award for Best Director. Her most recent movie, Hamnet, is up for this year’s Academy Award for Best Picture. She was the one who convinced Gellar to return to Buffy.
To Zhao, Gellar said, “I want to thank Chloé Zhao because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots. And thanks to Chloé I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me, but all of you, and this doesn’t change any of that.”
Gellar ended the video with a classic Buffy line, “If the apocalypse comes… you can still beep me.”
Hulu has not yet commented.
