Triple-killer jailed until at least 2059
The then teenager who bashed a man’s head, slit his mother’s throat and disemboweled a university lecturer after raping her while she was unconscious was given a life sentence with a starting tariff of 60 years before he can be considered for release.
“So what date I gine home? In 2060 what?” were the last words Ramario Antonio Roach said to the No. 4 Supreme Court yesterday.
His release date is around 2059, when the now 25-year-old will be 58, after deductions were taken into consideration and the tariff reduced to 33 years.
Roach, of Ocean Breeze, River Bay, St Lucy, had pleaded guilty at an earlier Session of the Continuous Sittings to the manslaughter, by diminished responsibility, of Tyrone Austin on December 18, 2018; his mother Joann Roach between January 18 and 21, 2019, and university lecturer Dr Sarah Sutrina between January 20 and 22, 2019. He was 18 at the time.
He was represented by King’s Counsel Andrew Pilgrim and attorney Kyle Walkes, while Director of Public Prosecutions Alliston Seale SC and State Counsel Paul Prescod appeared for the State.
Yesterday, Roach started his allocutus by saying, “Heavenly Father I have sinned and fallen short of your glory.”
Reading from a notebook, his last words to the court were sprinkled with biblical sayings as he “sincerely apologised” to the court and the families of his victims, saying: “I could only imagine the torture.”
He added: “Sorry can’t bring back the lives I have taken.”
The diagnosed schizophrenic said he was “no longer walking the dark path” but had “been transformed in the blood of Jesus Christ, in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit”.
