China Urges Pakistan and Afghanistan to Hold Talks as Border Tensions Escalate
Wang Yi has urged Pakistan and the Taliban administration to resolve their growing tensions through dialogue following recent clashes along the border.
According to China’s Foreign Ministry, Wang made the call during a phone conversation with Amir Khan Muttaqi, stressing that disputes between the two sides should be addressed through consultation and negotiation.
The Chinese statement warned that continued tensions could complicate the situation and threaten regional peace and stability if the conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan continues to escalate.
Earlier this week, Wang also spoke with Pakistan’s foreign minister Ishaq Dar and urged all sides to return to the negotiating table as soon as possible to avoid further escalation.
Border tensions have sharply increased in recent weeks, with Pakistan carrying out airstrikes in Kabul, Kandahar, Paktia and Paktika provinces, which Taliban officials say caused civilian casualties.
Taliban forces have also claimed retaliatory attacks, including drone strikes on Pakistani military positions and cross-border operations targeting security posts across the border from Nangarhar province.
Pakistani officials say hundreds of Taliban fighters and militants have been killed since the clashes began, while the Taliban claim dozens of Pakistani soldiers have died in the fighting.
The growing confrontation highlights the fragile security situation along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, where continued clashes risk destabilizing the region unless diplomatic efforts succeed in easing tensions.
