Bears lose safety Jonathan Owens to Colts
Jonathan Owens, the Bears safety best-known for his marriage to superstar gymnast Simone Biles, is leaving Chicago. Owens agreed to sign a one-year deal with the Colts, a source confirmed Friday.
Owens spent two years with the Bears, starting five games in 2024. He was a special teams contributor, playing 55% of the team’s kicking downs in 2024 and 58% in 2025. The Bears’ safeties room will look very different next year after starters Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker agreed to sign one-year deals with the Patriots and Steelers, respectively.
Byard has been his wife’s biggest fan since their 2023 marriage. In the summer of 2024, the Bears let Owens briefly leave training camp to travel to Paris to watch his wife in the Summer Olympics. The two went to the Winter Olympics as fans earlier this year.
“Overjoyed for her,” he said upon his return. “All of her accomplishments that she's made. Just being a face for gymnastics, man. She became the most decorated American gymnast ever. So it was amazing that I was able to be there and witness that for her.”
Biles has 11 Olympic medals and is considered the greatest female gymnast of all time.
