Vinai Venkatesham identifies 8 key reasons Tottenham fell short under Daniel Levy
In Tottenham’s latest Fan Advisory Board, the club’s CEO, Vinai Venkatesham, shared the key areas where Spurs want to improve so that they can compete for major honours.
The Spurs owners and the club’s hierarchy have come in for plenty of criticism as Tottenham find themselves on the brink of relegation disaster.
The transition away from the Daniel Levy era is not proving as smooth as the Lewis family may have hoped.

Vinai Venkatesham insists he now understands Tottenham’s weaknesses
Representatives from the club met with supporters’ representatives on March 3rd for the latest Fan Advisory Board meeting.
During the meeting, Venkatesham stated that he understands Tottenham Hotspur’s problems better after spending some time at the club, and listed the areas where the club want to improve to compete at the top.
The minutes of the meeting read: ‘The Club reflected on the recent sporting performance. While acknowledging the significance of the UEFA Europa League victory last season, it was noted that the Men’s team finished 17th in the Premier League and the Women’s team finished 11th in the Women’s Super League, with both teams ending their league campaigns one place above the relegation zone.
‘Vinai Venkatesham explained that since joining the Club in June 2025 there has been a comprehensive review of the organisation to determine the issues and actions required. He explained that whilst he had a perspective of the Club from the outside, it is only after spending time inside the Club that you can fully understand strengths, areas to improve and remedial actions needed.
‘While the Club has made strong progress in areas such as the stadium, training facilities, commercial growth and stadium operations, several areas were identified as falling short of what is required to compete at the highest level.’
Key issues identified included:
• Insufficient focus across the organisation on on-pitch success
• A lack of specialist expertise in certain areas and insufficient empowerment of experts in others
• A wage structure and player transaction approach that had impacted competitiveness in the transfer market
• A Men’s squad requiring strengthening in terms of quality, experience and leadership
• Insufficient prioritisation of the Women’s team
• Financial pressures arising from heavy transfer spending and limited player sales, increasing the relevance of Financial Fair Play constraints to future planning
• An internal culture requiring improvement in a number of areas
• A growing disconnect between the Club and its supporter base.
Venkatesham says Spurs have ‘a clear plan’ for the summer
It has been reported that Tottenham are eyeing an ambitious summer rebuild of their squad after choosing to keep their powder dry in January.
Venkatesham explained why the Lilywhites did not add more players to their squad in January and confirmed their plans to make significant additions this summer.
The minutes continued: ‘VV acknowledged supporter frustration regarding the January transfer window, noting that the January window is much less active than the summer window, with approximately 90% of global football transfers by value taking place in the summer window.
‘There is work to do, and while it will take multiple windows, there is a clear plan for the summer window. Investment has also increased in the Academy and in data and performance insights, as these have been identified as key areas of increased focus.’
