Why We Love This Deal
March has been a fantastic month to shop for deals at REI. You can save $100 on a Fjallraven jacket, $200 on an Arc’teryx jacket, or engage with a plethora of rare Kuhl deals. It’s also a fantastic time to pick up an already low-cost Merrell trail shoe while it's on sale for under $70.
The Merrell Speed Strike 2 Leather Hiking Shoes are now just $65. This shoe has amazing ratings for a style without the word "Moab" in the name. It owns a 4.8-star rating, and hikers are raving about it for its grip, durability, and style. Amazingly, this shoe has an MSRP that's uncharacteristically low for a Merrell shoe. Even so, it seems to be a favorite.

What Shoppers Should Know
- Sizes Available: From 8 to 14
- Key Materials: Suede upper, EVA midsole, and rubber outsole
- Special Features: NXT treated for odor control and a bellows tongue for keeping debris out of the shoe
- Best Use Case: City commutes and light hikes on the weekends or after work.
This is a lightweight Merrell hiking shoe with a grippy outsole and softer middle. Its upper is a full-grain suede leather that fits around a bellows tongue, a style of shoe tongue that fully attaches to the upper, preventing debris from landing in the shoe. The shoe is NXT treated, meaning you can go hard in this one without unleashing a funky stink in the aftermath of your endeavors.
What you should see in this shoe is that it’s a casual Merrell hiker that’s going to “perform” better in social settings than most of the Merrell lineup. The leather upper has a refined look, and though the side view of the shoe gives off Hoka Speedgoat trail runner vibes, this shoe lands more solely in the city commutes and light hikes category, if only due to the city-friendly appearance of its suede-leather upper. For rugged engineering and a more intense build, there’s always a Moab deal out there for you.

What Shoppers Are Saying
One shopper commented that this hiking shoe felt “like a dress shoe” and called it a “very sharp-looking shoe.” We'd have to agree—most hiking shoes are maximally gorpy, whereas this one is a bit more subdued in the way a classic sneaker normally would be.
Another wearer said the shoe “feels fantastic on my feet,” and that it is “very nice to wear and walk in.”
The Merrell Speed Strike 2 Leather Hiking Shoes are marked down to $65 right now. However, as this is a discontinued item at REI, once your size is sold out, it will be gone forever. If you want this shoe, don’t hesitate to buy it now.
