Upgrades to boost safety and accessibility on Wavertree High Street
The next stage of more than £2million of improvement works for Wavertree High Street is set to be approved at next week’s Cabinet meeting.
Following agreement by the Cabinet, Liverpool City Council will appoint a contractor to deliver a series of upgrades designed to improve safety and accessibility along the route, with extents from Clock Tower roundabout to Spofforth Road.
Work is scheduled to begin in mid- June and will take around 26 weeks to complete.
The scheme includes new controlled pedestrian crossings at the Picton Road, Wellington Road and Rathbone Road junction, alongside upgraded dropped kerbs and tactile paving at existing crossing points.
The road will also be resurfaced, and drainage improvements will be carried out.
These works form part of a wider programme to enhance key routes across Liverpool, funded through the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Key Route Network Levelling Up project.
The Council has been awarded £13.6 million to deliver improvements at a number of locations, including Queens Drive and Speke Hall Road. The investment aims to boost the reliability and resilience of major roads, reduce congestion and make routes safer and more accessible for all users.
Once the Cabinet has given approval, the appointed contractor and Council officers will meet with residents and businesses at a community event to outline the plans in more detail and answer questions. Information about the event will be shared in advance.
Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity said: “The safety of all road users is a priority to us, whether they’re driving, walking or wheeling.
“This is a particularly busy junction, and we know residents have raised concerns about how difficult it can be to cross safely.
“These upgrades will make a real difference for pedestrians and will help create a safer, more accessible environment for everyone who uses the high street.”
