Mancini temporarily steps down as Al-Sadd coach due to Qatar flight ban

Roberto Mancini has been forced to temporarily stand down as Al-Sadd head coach after being unable to return to Qatar due to the ongoing regional conflict that has resulted in a flight ban over the country.

The former Italy and Manchester City manager had been given permission to leave Qatar last week for a family medical matter, with his departure pre-arranged in coordination with the club’s management ahead of their AFC Champions League Elite first leg.

However, the deteriorating situation in the Gulf region has since grounded flights into the country, leaving Mancini stranded and unable to fulfil his coaching duties.

Al-Sadd confirm temporary Mancini change due to airspace restrictions

Al-Sadd confirmed the news in an official statement on social media, announcing that assistant coach Sergio Alegre will take charge of the team for tomorrow’s match against Umm Salal.

The club added that they are working to facilitate Mancini’s return at the earliest available opportunity.

The Italian has been in charge of Al-Sadd since November, having previously managed the Saudi Arabia national team following his controversial departure from the Italy job in 2023. The situation remains fluid and entirely dependent on developments in the wider regional conflict.
