Morrissey Cancels Concert Due to Being Too Sleepy to Perform
"Asleep" is not just a song by The Smiths for Morrissey — it's an essential.
The former frontman turned solo artist cancelled his gig in Valencia, planned for Thursday night, citing the city's noise level as simply too much for him to get enough rest to perform with.
“Tonight’s scheduled show in Valencia has been rendered impossible due to sleep deprivation. Morrissey drove from Milan to Valencia but has been unable to rest in Valencia due to noise.”
The announcement came from the Manchester rocker's official blog, Morrissey Central. In a previous statement before the show was outright cancelled, a post titled Mental in Valencia, was written with the same melancholy as some of Morrissey's most famous songs.
"Having travelled for two days by road, Morrissey reached the hotel in Valencia late on Wednesday. Any form of sleep or rest throughout the night was impossible due to festival noise / loud techno singing / megaphone announcements," he said. "This experience has left Morrissey in a catatonic state. Before leaving for tonight's scheduled concert, please check that the show remains possible under these circumstances."
In a follow-up post following the cancellation notice, he made it clear the change had devastated him. "Morrissey has described his hotel on Plaza Manises as …indescribable hell," the announcement said. "'It will take me one year to recover. And that is an understatement.'"
It's far from the first time the "This Charming Man" singer has cancelled a concert for unusual reasons, with one website tracking them estimating around 400 cancelled or postponed performances.
In July 2013, Morrissey cancelled the remainder of his South American tour leg due to "corrosively toxic food poisoning," which he blamed on a meal of penne tomato pasta. Last summer, he halted several European due dates due to what he cited as lack of support from his label.
