Road tax payment extended to end of March
The House on Thursday passed a law extending to the end of March the deadline for payment of road tax, citing glitches with online payments on the website of the Road Transport Department.
The deadline for paying road tax was midnight on March 11. It has now been pushed back to March 31.
Dipa MP Alekos Tryfonides said that on the last day – Wednesday, March 11 – the system of the Road Transport Department (RTD) experienced a problem, preventing many from renewing their road tax.
People reported the RTD website was down on Wednesday – likely due to heavy online traffic as many rushed to pay the tax at the last minute.
Earlier, the RTD had announced that last-minute payments could be done only online.
As of Monday, a total of 677,113 vehicles had their road tax renewed.
Late renewals incur a €10 fine plus 10 per cent extra charge of the current year’s registration fee.
The road tax permits can be renewed for three, six, nine or 12 months.
Vehicles not renewed or immobilised may be removed from the TOM register if the 2025 tax remains unpaid by the deadline.
