Old Dominion University Shooting Update: Multiple Injured, Shooter Dead
On Thursday morning, March 12, there was a shooting at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginial.
According to officials, the gunman is dead and two people are critically injured, news station WSLS states.
The shooter opened fire around 10:49 a.m. in Constant Hall, university reported in an emergency alert. So far, the two people who were critically injured haven't been identified. They were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in critical condition, a hospital spokesperson told reporters.

At 10:48 a.m., the university sent out an urgent alert stating that there was an active threat in the building. At 11:30 a.m., the university called the event an "active shooter situation" but announced that the shooter had been "neutralized."
So far, officials haven't offered more details or the identity of the gunman.
According to Old Dominion University, there is no longer a threat on campus, but people are being told to avoid the area.
ODU President Brian O. Hemphill released a statement after the incident, stating, "Earlier today, March 12, 2026, Old Dominion University faced a tragedy on our main campus. I am grateful for the swift response of our police officers, emergency management personnel, and our partners at the City of Norfolk who promptly assisted the injured."
He added, "Due to the incident, Old Dominion University has canceled classes and suspended operations on main campus for the remainder of the day, March 12, 2026."

"The safety of our campus community is my top priority. We are deeply committed to safeguarding all Monarchs and ensuring a secure learning, living, and working environment at all times," he added in the statement. "We take this responsibility very seriously and remain vigilant in our efforts to maintain a safe campus." He concluded the statement by stating, "I extend my thoughts and prayers to those impacted by the incident, as well as the entire campus and the broader community."
He also said that updates about the incident would be available on the university's official website as information becomes available.
