For those who dig a utilitarian vibe for their timepiece, a field watch is a must have. Rugged, reliable, and easy to read, a good one is a timeless (pun intended) bit of kit and perfect as an everyday watch. There are quite a few killer options on the market today but this new Timex Waterbury Ace 3-hand model offers a helluva bang for a modest amount of bucks.
The 41mm case is cast in stainless-steel. So it’s obviously strong, robust and highly resistant to corrosion, but it’s also hypoallergenic. The metal is both brushed and polished to give it a dynamic finish and a good amount of light play. An oversized crown allows the wear to set the time easily, even when wearing gloves.

The black dial is contrasted with Arabic numerals painted in white—an outer ring with minutes and an inner scale with hours. The sword-style hands and indexes are luminescent for low-light legibility, while the seconds hand is painted bright red to make timing an event easy on the eyes. The dial is topped with a scratch-resistant, mineral glass crystal for added durability.

Inside, the Waterbury Ace is powered by a quartz analog movement capable of accuracy of milliseconds per day and is available either on a stainless-steel bracelet with a twin-trigger clasp, or a black leather strap with a pin buckle. Both options are outfitted with quick-release spring bars. So those who enjoy changing their style up can swap out 20mm straps on the fly without tools.
The Timex Waterbury Ace is available at timex.com for $189 on leather or $219 with the stainless-steel bracelet.
