Experts Warn Against TikTok Trend That Can Break Condoms

A viral tip making the rounds on TikTok claims coconut oil is the perfect all-natural lubricant in the bedroom. However, health experts are warning that the trend could create a major problem for men who rely on condoms to prevent pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections.

While coconut oil has built a reputation as a multipurpose wellness staple—used in everything from cooking to skincare—doctors warn that using it during sex can weaken condoms in minutes and potentially increase the risk of breakage.

In other words, what seems like a harmless bedroom shortcut could end up sabotaging your protection.

The Viral Lube Tip Experts Say to Avoid

TikTok influencers have been praising coconut oil as a natural alternative to store-bought lubricants. While some users were eager to try it out, OBGYN and MPH Dr. Kate McLean, Chief Medical Officer at Evvy, told The New York Post that idea overlooks several important problems

The biggest concern for men is what coconut oil does to condoms.

“Coconut oil sounds like it would be a gentle and natural option as a lubricant; however, vaginal health is more nuanced than that,” McLean said.

Even if everything feels fine in the moment, oil-based products can rapidly degrade latex — the material used in most condoms.

“Oil and latex don’t mix,” she stressed. “Coconut oil can begin weakening latex condoms within minutes, making them more prone to tearing even if there’s no visible damage. If someone is relying on condoms for pregnancy or STI prevention, using a lubricant explicitly labeled as condom-compatible is the safest and most predictable choice.”

That means a condom could fail without any obvious warning — increasing the risk of both unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

And the issue doesn’t stop with vaginal sex. McLean says the same condom risks apply during anal sex as well.

“Coconut oil can feel slick and longer-lasting, but it will weaken latex condoms and isn’t specifically formulated or tested for anal tissue, which is more prone to small tears," she sadded.

Because anal tissue is more delicate, using the wrong lubricant can increase friction and injury risks in addition to condom failure.

What to Use Instead

If lubrication is needed, experts say the safest option is a silicone-based lubricant designed specifically for sexual activity.

“It is usually the safest and most reliable option because it provides a durable glide while maintaining condom integrity and helping protect the tissue from friction.”

Certain TikTok trends may promise “natural” hacks for daily tasks big and small, but when condoms are part of the equation, the wrong lubricant could turn protection into a gamble.
