The Best Watches on TV
On the whole, TV is pretty good these days. Between old stalwarts like HBO and up-and-comers like Apple TV+, there’s an abundance of riches on the small screen. Better still, a lot of these shows have started featuring some of our favourite watches, often as major plot points. Here are some of the most memorable.
Mustafa Speaks in Landman: Rolex Daytona
Learn More
Rolex’s perennially in-demand chronograph had a featured cameo in the second season of Taylor Sheridan’s oil-industry drama Landman. To celebrate twenty years at M-Tex, roughneck Dale Bradley surprises Crew Chief Theodore “Boss” Ramone with a new “panda” dial Daytona (retail price $21,300). In a nod to the watch’s resale value on the grey market, another roughneck suggests that Ramone could sell it and retire. “You couldn’t retire,” quips Bradley. “But you could buy a pretty nice boat!”
Jon Hamm in Your Friends and Neighbours: Patek Philippe Nautilus
Learn More
Jon Hamm returned to peak antihero form in this new Apple TV+ series, in which luxury watches become pivotal his fall from upper-middle-class grace. “The Patek Philippe Nautilus sealed 18-karat white-gold blue sunburst dial, water-resistant up to 30 meters,” Hamm narrates, as the watch’s specs flash across the screen, including both its US$70,110 retail price and its US$169,000 grey market value. Hamm fans and luxury watch geeks alike will be tuning in for the much-anticipated second season, premiering on April 3.
Kit Harrington in Industry: Rolex Datejust
Learn More
HBO’s sexy finance drama (now there’s a phrase no one could have anticipated) uses watches to great effect, especially the vintage Rolex Datejust Lady Yasmin Muck (née Kara-Hanani) gifts her husband, Henry, on his 40th birthday. “I found it. And I had it serviced,” she says, handing him the watch. In an episode in which Henry grapples with childhood trauma, the watch takes on a special significance as a stand-in for his late father.
Tom Hiddleston in The Night Manager: Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch
Learn More
In the long-awaited second season of this John LeCarre adaptation, Tom Hiddleston returns with a serious accessory upgrade. In the first episode, the former British Army soldier recruited by MI6 appears wearing not just any Speedy, but a version in solid Moonshine Gold. The spy business must be treating him well.
Harrison Ford in Shrinking: IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XV
Learn More
Harrison Ford, who recently received the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award, has been quietly crushing it as Dr. Paul Rhoades in this underrated Apple TV+ series. In the latest season, the psychotherapist reckons a difficult medical diagnosis while wearing a beautiful vintage IWC pilot’s watch — which may or may not be a nod to Ford’s love of aviation. If that doesn’t make you want to check it out, did we mention Michael J. Fox is in this season?
